R.S. Prasanna, director and producer of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, is making headlines these days for his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. The movie stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh in lead roles. In a recent interview, R.S. Prasanna opened up about the film’s subject, the uniqueness of its concept, and the preparations that went into making it.
How is Sitaare Zameen Par different from its predecessor?
"Taare Zameen Par made us all cry, and I hope Sitaare Zameen Par makes you laugh. It will make you emotional too, but it is primarily a comedy that will bring you joy," says R.S. Prasanna.
He adds, "Sitaare Zameen Par is like a new chapter to the idea we had in Taare Zameen Par, with Aamir Khan being the connection between the two. The film introduces a whole new world, new characters, and a fresh energy, but its soul and heart remain the same."
Your films always explore fresh and unique themes. Is there a reason behind that?
“I always enjoy doing something new and different. When I wrote Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, it was a fresh subject even for me, and it surprised people. I love surprising audiences. I feel that when you try something unique, there’s a special kind of energy that comes with it, and then it doesn’t feel like a challenge anymore,” he says.
“Some people fear trying new things, while others get excited by it. I’m one of those who are always enthusiastic about bringing something new. Even Aamir Sir gets more excited when you ask him to do something unconventional.”
How did you prepare Aamir Khan’s character?
“I’ve always been a big fan of Aamir Sir. From Rangeela to Dil Chahta Hai and many others, he’s played fun-loving, carefree characters with ease—without makeup or body transformations. Watching a superstar play such simple roles is a delight.
For this film, I told him very early on that no heavy prep is needed. The more natural and relatable we keep it, the better it will be. We’re not adding anything extra or over-the-top.
Aamir Sir is someone who prepares a lot for every role, but he also understands exactly how much is needed for a film—and sticks to that. Sometimes, when he asked, ‘Are we preparing too little?’ I would say, ‘You’ve been preparing all your life. That’s what will shine here.’”
What was your own preparation like, especially since there wasn’t much room for fiction?
“For this project, we had consultants and specialist doctors on board. We conducted workshops with them to understand how to interact and communicate effectively. We held workshops for the entire cast and crew.
We trained with lighting teams, with the stars (actors), and built everything step by step before we began shooting. Every element—be it lighting or sound—was carefully managed. Even the actors (especially the children) ensured that we all remained comfortable on set.”
How was your experience working with debut actors who are also special kids?
“My experience with them was absolutely wonderful. I used to miss them when we weren’t shooting and often video-called them just to chat. I’ve observed classes with special kids and noticed how their sense of love, manners, and behavior often surpasses that of other children.
Because of them, our set had a constant cheerful vibe. Every single day, when you’d walk onto set, you’d be welcomed with a magical hug. They’d dance and sing for no reason—and working with them took away all the tension of filmmaking. These kids are simply amazing.”
How were these special kids selected for the film?
“Casting directors Tessa Joseph and Anmol Ahuja did a phenomenal job. They held about 2,500 auditions and workshops. They not only understood every artist but also boosted their confidence.”
What was the most special aspect of this film for you?
“Many of the debut actors in this film are special kids—some with Down Syndrome and others on the Autism Spectrum. These children are the real stars of the film. Their energy, honesty, and innocence have brought the story to life in a way that’s truly magical.”
Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 20, 2025.
