Model and actress Sara Khan made her mark in the television industry by playing the iconic role of Sadhna in the popular serial Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai, capturing the hearts of audiences across the nation. She later appeared in Bigg Boss and went on to work in films like Humari Adhuri Kahani alongside Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan. Currently, Sara is in the spotlight with her upcoming film Choices. In an exclusive conversation with MayaPuri, she shared her thoughts on this new project, her career, her diverse talents, new ventures, and the issue of nepotism.
- You have an exciting new project coming up. What can you tell us about it?
"I am really excited about this project! When I first entered the industry, I was very young. Over time, I grew here and it became a learning experience for me. I learned everything—from shooting to lighting, and all the technicalities. Reflecting on all that, I decided to branch out and explore something different beyond acting. I want to thank Shimaru TV and my entire team for their support. Also, a huge thank you to Mohit Chauhan for agreeing to sing for the project."
- You moved from Bhopal to Mumbai and have worked here for many years. Did you ever think you’d achieve such success? Could you share some insights into your journey?
"To be honest, I had no connection with the industry when I was in Bhopal. I was spotted there and was offered a show, which became a big hit. At that time, I never imagined I would get such opportunities. After that, I was part of Bigg Boss and many other projects. Today, getting a project isn’t that difficult. The industry is huge now, with so many channels and platforms. There are plenty of opportunities. The real struggle happens when you try to establish a steady place in the industry."
- You once took on a role that you didn’t like and decided to step away from it. Could you tell us more about that?
"It was quite an interesting experience. At times, you take roles because you need to sustain yourself and support your family, even if you don’t like them. But when I made the decision to walk away from a role I didn’t enjoy, I realized that I shouldn’t depend solely on acting. If I have other talents, like writing and singing, then why not explore those? I decided to follow my passion and start working on a new project called Black."
- How did you feel working on this project? What was your experience like?
"This wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing team. I had Bharti Entertainment by my side, and my director Abhay, along with musicians Ayush and Akash, all contributed to bringing this project to life. Making a film involves many technical details that one person cannot handle alone. You need the right people, and I’m glad I chose the right team. That’s why the project was a success."
- How do you decide on a project or a character? How do you know when to say ‘yes’?
"This project is something I wrote and created myself. When you bring your own ideas and visions to life, it’s very fulfilling. The timing is crucial in any project. When the time is right, you make the right decisions. That’s exactly what happened with this project. Everything just fell into place."
- What is the story of the film Choices?
"The film is all about choices—what you choose in life and how your decisions shape your circumstances. It focuses on the choices we make in difficult situations and the consequences that follow."
- You’ve been a successful actress, singer, and now you’re also a writer and director. Could you tell us more about your journey in these fields?
"Yes, I’ve written and sung my own song, which is part of this project. As for writing books, I find that a bit boring. I prefer reading specific types of books that inspire me, like The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, which focuses on positive thinking and manifestation. But novels and long stories don’t really interest me."
- In the current film industry, with new films and series being released every day, do you find it challenging to stand out?
"Yes, there’s a lot of content being created today. But the success of a project depends on how passionately it is made. Everyone can make content, but if the content lacks emotion and passion, it won’t resonate with the audience. Making films or projects requires heart and dedication, not just money."
- What are your thoughts on nepotism in the industry?
"Nepotism isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If a filmmaker wants to make a movie, they might prefer casting their own family member over someone else. It’s natural that they’d want to take the risk with their own child, rather than with a stranger. Nepotism is a part of the industry, and it happens everywhere. It’s just how things work."
- Could you share more about your upcoming projects?
"I’ve already written a film, which has been directed by Rahat Kazmi. We are working on the editing now. In addition to that, I have some new singing projects coming up. I’m also starting my own music label, so you’ll be hearing a lot more from me soon."
- Finally, what would you like to say to your audience?
"My film "Choices" will be released on Shimaru TV on 21st November. Please watch it, and let us know what you think. Also, listen to the songs, and feel free to share your feedback."
Sara Khan's upcoming film features Ridhima and Jaskaran alongside her. The title track of the film has been sung by the famous singer Mohit Chauhan, along with Sara Khan herself. The film is set to release on Shumaru TV on November 21.
