The trailer launch of Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam Dhar’s highly anticipated film HAQ took place in Mumbai with much fanfare. Inspired by the landmark 1985 Shah Bano case, this courtroom drama explores women’s rights, justice, religion, and the complexities of personal faith. The film is set to release in theaters soon. The event was attended by Yami Gautam (playing Shazia Bano), Emraan Hashmi, director Suparn S. Varma, debutante Vartika Singh, Sheeba Chaddha, producer Amrita Pandey, and others. Here’s what they had to say.

HAQ (2)

Yami Gautam on Emraan and the Film:

When asked about acting alongside Emraan, Yami said, "When I first received the script, I discussed it with Suparn and writer Reshu Nath. It felt very special. When I learned Emraan was on board, I knew no one else could do justice to this role. People have been waiting for his return—not just for the film, but his performances, music, everything. On screen, he disappears into the character. Even without workshops or readings, he was so on-point. I admire actors who are brilliant performers and true professionals—punctual, respectful, and confident. Thank you, Emraan, for this unforgettable opportunity."

Emraan Hashmi on Yami and the Film:

Responding to Yami, Emraan said, "Thank you for the wonderful words." On the film, he added, "I hope the trailer is well received. The film begins with a courtroom fight between a man and a woman, but at its heart, it’s about love, faith, and personal beliefs. It’s the story of a woman fighting for her dignity and society confronting uncomfortable questions we often ignore. Reading the script, I realized the makers had raised very important questions: What is justice? Who defines it? How does it affect everyday people, especially women, whose voices often go unheard?

HAQ (4)

The 1985 Shah Bano case shook the nation, dividing it between personal faith and constitutional rights. Yet, the issues remain relevant across generations. Beneath the surface, removing politics and religion, it’s a deeply human story of two broken individuals—a man fighting for his faith and a woman for her basic dignity. Some films are not just for entertainment; they provoke thought, spark conversation, and inspire change. That’s the ‘HAQ’ of this film. And Yami? She was effortless, professional, and a joy to work with. She brought entertainment, emotion, and realism to the role of Shah Bano. I learned so much from her."

Vartika Singh’s Debut Experience:

Debutante Vartika Singh shared, "This is my first film, so I was very nervous. Yami and Emraan gave me confidence on screen. In one scene, I even cried in front of them." Emraan’s family commented that she seemed like a seasoned artist. Vartika also thanked director Suparn Varma, saying, "He believed in me and supported me in every way."

Sheeba Chaddha on Working with Junglee Pictures:

Sheeba Chaddha said, "This is my third film with Junglee Pictures, and it’s always a pleasure. Being part of this team is a joy, and working with everyone has been wonderful."

Director Suparn Varma’s Vision:

Suparn Varma explained, "The core story of the film is not romance, but a man’s beliefs versus a woman’s dignity. There was romance between Emraan and Yami, but the story came first. The song 'Kabool Hai' condenses a decade of romance into a few minutes. The film took three years of research and writing. With audience support, this film had to be made."

Producer Amrita Pandey on the Film:

Amrita Pandey said, "Reading the script gave me goosebumps. Emraan and Yami were fully committed. The film is based on real events and features strong characters. The questions of gender and justice are still relevant today."

What the Film is About:

HAQ is based on true events from the 1985 Shah Bano case. It follows divorced Muslim woman Shah Bano, who fought in the Supreme Court against her husband Mohammad Ahmed Khan for alimony after he gave her triple talaq. Shah Bano, a mother of five, won the case, securing her legal right to maintenance. Yami Gautam portrays her with a powerful presence. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on 7 November.
