One night. Two murders. Two suspects. One truth. What you get is lots of suspense, thrill and edge-of-the-seat entertainment. Legendary film-maker BR Chopra's grandson, Abhay Chopra, makes his directorial debut with Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna starrer Ittefaq. It is the official remake of Yash Chopra's 1969 release Ittefaq starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda.
I'll be honest with this one—the expectations were quite low considering the star casts' recent track record and the fact that remakes usually end up ruining it for me. However, the Ittefaq trailer has left us mighty impressed and the cliff-hanger towards the end only leaves us asking for more!
The trailer follows a chain of events over one fateful night, which leads to the only two eye-witnesses, Vikram (Sidharth Malhotra) and Maya (Sonakshi Sinha) ending up being the prime suspects to a double murder case being investigated by a ruthless cop, Dev (Akshaye Khanna).
To kick things off, straight up kudos to debutant director Abhay Chopra. In an industry which believes in playing it safe, here's a young, passionate man who clearly knows his craft and doesn't want to play by the rules. Thrillers are one of the least explored genres of the Hindi film industry and there are hardly a handful of genuine thrillers in the past few years which are worth remembering. In an environment like this and with a backing of the biggest names in the industry, Abhay chose a classic a whodunit murder mystery and seems to have done complete justice to the original story. He uses his actors really well in the trailer—giving an insight into the characters but still manages to instil a grey area amongst each of them, which in turn makes the trailer a genuinely thrilling experience. He couples it with a powerful background score and a crisp editing style which leaves you confused, but intrigued. Easily one of the best edited trailers in a long, long time!
Coming to the cast, this is an extremely important film for the entire cast. Both Sid and Sona's last few films have been box-office duds and even though Akshaye Khanna managed to impress in his recent outings Dishoom & Mom, he still needs that one big film to get him back in the big league. He looks intense as the man on a mission to unravel the truth and gets ample screen time along with some memorable lines in the trailer. On the other hand, both Sonakshi and Sidharth look decent in their parts and their subdued characters come across as a fresh change from the glossy, over-the-top films they've usually been associated with.
With the likes of Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan associated with the film, the film should get a wide release and to top that, there is no other Hindi film scheduled to release on the same day. On the other hand, the team will have to really have to put in extra efforts for the promotions to actually draw in the audiences to the theatres as the film is not exactly up there when it comes to the star power. Guess we'll have to wait for the film to release to solve the mystery of the box-office. Meanwhile, try figuring out Vikram and Maya's mysterious story with the theatrical trailer of Ittefaq.
Produced by BR Films, Dharma Productions & Red Chillies Entertainment, Ittefaq releases on 3 November 2017.
