Karan Johar was the only son of Yash Johar, one of the finest and most helpful men who was also a successful producer. Karan was interested in films right from the time he was in school. Aaditya Chopra, the son of the renowned director Yash Chopra was also crazy about films and used to see a new film, whatever the language or the genre every Friday in any of the theatres anywhere in Bombay.

Aaditya was successful in convincing his father about his ability to direct a film and that is how began the making of one of the most successful and trend - setting film ,

D D L J.

Karan was the chief assistant director of the film and had also played an important role as the best friend of Shah Rukh Khan.

It was during the making of D D L J that Karan learnt the nitty- gritties of writing a script and how to direct a film.

It was also during the making of D D L J that Karan struck up a strong friendship with S R K who was right at the top those days.

Karan had written his own script and was waiting for his chance to direct a film.

His father was making some very big films with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Raaj Kumar and S R K and was planning to make other and bigger films......

He had made films with S R K and wanted to make another film with him.

Karan had told S R K about the script he had written and how he was eager to direct his script.

S R K remembered what Karan had told him and when Karan"s father wanted S R K to work in a film to be produced by him, S R K told him that he would work in his film, but only if he took Karan as the director. It took S R K time to convince Yash Johar about his.

son's talent, but he did not give up trying till Yash Johar agreed to let Karan direct a film under his banner, Dharma Productions and that was how "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" was made with. S R K, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee and the film was not only a big hit, but was also acclaimed and appreciated by the masses and the classes alike and Karan Johar went on to be a leading name among filmmakers in India.

Unfortunately, the amiable and one of the most respected names, Yash Johar fell a victim to cancer and died when his son had best taken his first few steps as a filmmaker, but fortunately he has given a new life and a new direction to Dharma Productions, a banner which his father had floated after working as a production controller of big banners like Navketan, Ajanta Arts and even some leading companies from Hollywood.
