Juhi Chawla (born 13 November 1967) is an Indian actress, model, film producer, and the winner of the 1984 Miss India beauty pageant. She has received two Filmfare Awards. Chawla has worked predominantly in Hindi language films, in addition to Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu language films. She is one of the most popular actresses of Hindi Cinema, and garnered particular praise for her comedic timing and vivacious on-screen persona.

Chawla made her film debut in Sultanat (1986), and received wider public recognition with the highly successful tragic romance Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year. She went on to establish herself as a leading actress of Hindi cinema with the top grossing family drama Swarg (1990), and the thriller Pratibandh (1990). She achieved further success with the super-hit romance Bol Radha Bol (1992), and the romantic comedy Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992). She then appeared in consecutive top grossing films, garnering appreciation for her roles as a bar dancer in the action thriller Lootere (1993), a sacrificing woman in the romance Aaina (1993), a South Indian in the romantic comedy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and a victimized woman in the romantic thriller Darr (1993). She went on to play strong roles in box office successes Deewana Mastana (1997), Yes Boss (1997) and Ishq (1997). In the 21st century, Chawla began working with independent filmmakers in art-house projects, garnering critical acclaim for her work in Jhankaar Beats (2003), 3 Deewarein (2003), My Brother Nikhil (2005), Bas Ek Pal (2006), I Am (2011), Gulaab Gang (2014) and Chalk n Duster (2016).

In addition to film acting, Chawla has been featured as a talent judge for the third season of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She has participated in several stage shows and concert tours, and has engaged in philanthropic activities. Chawla is the co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders. She married industrialist Jay Mehta in 1995 and has two children with him.

Early life and background

Juhi Chawla was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India on 13 November 1967 and raised up in Ambala to a Punjabi speaking father and Gujarati mother. Her father was an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).[6] She completed her schooling from Fort Convent School, Mumbai,[7] and graduated from Sydenham College, Mumbai with a specialisation in HR.[8] She was the winner of Miss India title in 1984.[9] She also won the Best Costume Award in the Miss Universe contest in 1984.[10] She is also an accomplished dancer. In an interview for the talk show Baaje Payal, she mentioned having learned Kathak for three years and regretted giving it up as it could have helped her in her career as an actress. She is also an accomplished classical singer and has been training for the last six years.
