There was a time in the 60's and 70's when an actress passing the age of 30 was considered a disqualification to be a leading lady who could play romantic roles opposite heroes who were almost twice their age - Ali Peter John

They were literally punished by filmmakers and writers who did not create roles for them.

And if they still wanted to work , they were offered roles of the sister of the hero and even mothers who had to do the same kind of roles that the one time mothers like Nirupa Roy, Sulochana , Lalita Pawar , Waheeda Rehman , Mala Sinha and Nutan were offered.

The money they received as heroines was cut down by more than half or even more and what was most shocking was that they were not even offered the same kind of respect they received when they were heroines .

And this draconian unwritten law of the industry ruined the careers of some of the best actresses .

Some of the actresses tried to break this rule , but the industry continued to treat women who were over 30 and who committed the grave crime of getting married as secondary citizens in an industry which spoke about equality among all classes of people and said that it believed in giving opportunities to anyone of any class and age the opportunities to show their talent under any circumstances.

This unwritten law of the industry continued till the 80's when some of the most talented and highly respected actresses of an earlier generation had to play mothers , aunts and even maids of the hero or the heroine.

And they had to play these roles if they had to survive and make a living in the industry where they had spent all their lives .

But like they say change is the rule of life and circumstances would lead to the breaking of even the most stringent laws and rules .

If you ask me , I think if there have been too leading actresses who have broken these kinds of rules , they are Kajol and Kareena Kapoor .

Kajol who had proved herself as a formidable actress in any kind of roles had married Ajay Devgn in 1996 when she was at the peak of her career and the industry said it was all over for her .

To add to their own belief that Kajol would have to give up her flourishing career , Kajol took a long break from acting and decided to be the home keeper of her husband , Ajay .

The industry's faith in their own fake belief got a shot in their chests when Kajol had 2 children in quick succession , a boy called Yug and a girl called Nysa .

However , Kajol had made it clear after her marriage that she was not giving up films , but was only taking a break to take care of her family.

And when she announced that she was willing to stage a comeback , there were any number of filmmakers who were willing to cast her in significant roles , but Kajol had her own priorities and worked only in the films of Yash Raj and her husbsnd's films .

She started off with a bang when she agreed to play a very dynamic role with Aamir Khan in Yash Raj Films "Fanaa" after which she was offered many other similar roles but she is still waiting for roles that could set her heart on fire and enlighten her mind to come up with nothing but the best .

She is in her early forties now and still has the fire to know more about bringing characters alive on screen .

The girl who charmed audiences with her first film "Bekhudi" is now all set to start a new chapter in her career at forty plus .

Kareena Kapoor had started off as a glamour girl who was a part of the Kapoor Khandaan .

But after her very first few films , she fell in love and married her co-star Saif Ali Khan and married him even though he was a Muslim and had already married Amrita Singh and had a son , Ibrahim and a daughter Sara Ali Khan from Saif with Amrita Singh as their mother.

Kareena like Kajol was at the peak of her career and also the highest paid actress, but she preferred to be the begum of the Nawab of Pataudi and the mother of their children .

But this passion to take care of her family didnt last long and she staged a dramatic comeback with films like "Heroine " , "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" , "Jab We Met", " 3 Idiots ", " P k" and other significant films.

Her comeback films proved to be more successful that her earlier films and now when she is in her 40s and is the mother of 2 children , she is still an actress in great demand and also better paid than all the actresses of today .

She will soon be a mother of 2 who will prove that age , status and any other barrier will not be able to stop the flow of genuine talent of which she has an abundance.

She will next be seen in Aamir Khans "Laal Singh Chadda" and the fact that Aamir waited for her pregnancy to get over to complete tge shooting of his film is proof of the talent that Kareena has in her .

At the moment , Kareena has only "Laal Singh Chadda" on her hands , but I am sure that the release of the much delayed Aamir Khan Film will lead her to the destination marked for her .

Rani Mukherjee is another talented actress who is married to Aditya Chopra and has a daughter called Adira , but is still waiting for roles that she can and will do justice to , like she did in her last release "Mardaangi" and will be seen again in the advanced avtaar of her role in "Mardaangi"
