This is about the year 1968. Both those brothers were waiting for a major award after almost 14 years of their careers. But the award was that he was waiting for waiting. However, these two brothers, Kalyanji Virji Shah and Anandji Virji Shah were giving more than one hit. Kalyanji, a great musician and Hemant Kumar aka Hemant da, who started working together, brought a new musical instrument in the film industry – Clavioline. The instrument looks somewhat like a portable piano, but the sound of this synthesizer comes out like a bean. Playing this, Kalyanji gave that famous bean voice in the 1954 film Naagin, which was later copied in dozens of films and most recently, director-producer Imtiaz Ali in his item number song 'We Twist' in Love Aaj Kal in 2009. Had also copied this tune.
From Naagin's Hit Tune to Kalyanji Anandji's Breakthrough: A Musical Journey
Imagine, from 1954 to 2009, even after 55 years, the craze for his Naagin tune was such that the filmmaker had to pick up the tune. However, the song 'Tan Dole Mera Man Dole' from this film – Naagin – became a huge hit. Kalyanji Anand ji was given the opportunity of a first break by famous film producer Subhash Desai. One day he heard Kalyanji playing some instrument and said rightly, Come on, now you make your own music. But Kalyanji Anand ji had not composed music before this. Both of them got confused. Then he took help from his father. He simply said, "See if it is working in front, then don't leave it."It was from here that Kalyanji got courage and Subhash Desai offered him to work in not one or two but 6 films. Kalyanji made his brother Anand his assistant and made his debut in the year 1956 with the film Bajrangbali. After this, this film made with Bharat Bhushan and Nirupa Roy in Samrat Chandragupta also became a bumper hit and Kalyanji Anandji's music was also well-liked. One of its songs “Chahe na pass ho chahe door ho, mere sapno ki tum picture ho” became quite popular. Then just after this the films Satta Bazaar and Madari were released in the same year 1959 and its songs were also liked by the people. From here he also joined his brother Anandji Virji Shah with him and now this pair has become famous by the name of Kalyanji Anandji. After this Subhash Desai was ready to bring his brother Manmohan Desai into films. He said that the music would be of Kalyanji Anandji only. But Raj Kapoor had his own team, he used to make songs with Shankar Jaikishan, Mukesh and Shailendra. Here Kalyanji Anandji liked Mohammad Rafi in singing but he liked multiple choice in lyricists. In this affair, the film kept getting delayed and finally, Raj Kapoor had to agree to Subhash Desai, but Kalyanji Anandji himself was in the mood to take Mukesh's voice, so it was decided that the music would be of Kalyanji Anandji and the songs would be written by Qamar Jalalabadi. But Mukesh's voice will be given only. This film took both Manmohan Desai and Kalyanji Anandji to heights. Be it the song 'Chhaliya Mera Naam' or 'Teri Rahon Mein Khade Hain', every song became a super hit.
Before recording the song Dum Dum Diga Diga, Mukesh also interrupted “Kalyanji, this song is not of my category, Where can I sing such songs”, Then Kalyanji said “Mukesh ji, what can you sing? You know, if you sing cool, you will see how popular this song will be.
Aur hua bhi wahi, Dum-dum deega-deega, Mausam Bheega-Bheega, Bin Piye Main To Gira, and Main To Gira became superhits and were often heard on the radio. After this, he also did the film Bluff-Master with Shammi Kapoor. Here again, an experiment took place. Shammi Kapoor always preferred Mohammed Rafi's voice for himself, but Kalyanji Anand ji lost songs to Shammi Kapoor from four singers, not one or two in the same film, according to the songs. (Read the detailed article related to these songs on page number ___) These four songs featured Mohammed Rafi, Hemant Kumar and Mukesh To The Hi, as well as Shamshad Begum who gave voice to Shammi Kapoor.
Now the era of colorful films was coming and Shashi Kapoor was yearning for the Silver Jubilee film despite being a hit. Or should we say that we were waiting? Kalyanji was also waiting for the same. Then TR Sethia's film Jab-Jab Phool Khilein was announced which was to be shot in the plains of Kashmir. Kalyanji-Anandji decided to decorate the music accordingly. They thought that there would be eco in the litigants as well, now how to bring eco, because there was no technology like today.
Then Kalyanji decided to do another experiment, he told Rafi Saheb that where you want to give an echo effect, you should go away from the mike. Yun Kiya To Baat Ban Bhi Gayi became the most popular song of the movie Offu Khudaya. But out of 7 songs of the film, 6 songs became super duper hits.
After Offu Khudaya, 'Ek Tha Gul Aur Ek Thi Bulbul' was also liked a lot, while 'Na Na Karte Pyaar Tumhiin Se Kar Baithe' was also a huge hit. Then how can one get away with not making eye contact with foreigners After all, 'Yeh saman, saman hai yeh pyar ka' is heard and sung a lot even today. This film was not a silver but a golden jubilee and the demand for Kalyaniji Anandji's music skyrocketed.
Usually, Kalyanji preferred to work with Anandji Indeevar but he also liked Anand Bakshi's writing. But the problem with Anand Bakshi used to be that he used to write 25-25 verses of the same song and used to say, choose 3 of your own meaning. Also, Anand Bakshi used to insist that he should get all the songs of a film. This was accepted in Jab Jab Phool Khileen but this did not happen in the film 'Himalaya Ki God'. Here, out of seven songs, 4 were written by Anand Bakshi and two by Indeevar while one song was written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Although all the songs of this film were liked, "Chand Si Mehbooba Ho Meri" written by Anand Bakshi became very popular.
Kalyanji became closer to Manoj Kumar from this film and when Manoj Kumar announced the film Upkar, he chose Kalyanji Anandji for the music. Contrary to the trend of Bollywood, Kalyanji got many singers and lyricists to work in this film too. Mohammed Rafi and Lata were fixed in this film, as well as songs from Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Mahendra Kapoor. Also kept variety in writing songs. Indivar and Jalalabadi were there, along with Prem Dhawan and Gulshan Bawra were also given a chance. In fact, it was Kalyanji who gave the first chance to all these three.
Upkar's song 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle' created such a wave of patriotism that it became necessary to play this song on every Republic and Independence Day. This was the second film after 'Himalaya Ki God Mein' for which Kalyanji Anandji was nominated in Filmfare but did not get the award.
“When we start working, the priority is to keep getting work by whatever means. Then when work starts getting good, the brain says that you get the money you want. Now when the money also starts flowing, the heart says that only that work has to be done in which there is something new, something creative, and can feel good. Then when you start doing this, somewhere there is a voice of self-respect that now we will get respect, get awards, name on stage.
However, the credit for starting the first concert on the stage also goes to Kalyanji. In the 50s, he started performing concerts under the name of Kalyanji Virji & Party and whether it was Muhammad Rafi or Kishore Kumar, it was Kalyanji who took him out from behind the scenes of playback singing and brought him in front of the world. However, it was about the award. Kalyanji-Anandji also wanted him to get Filmfare now. The film Upkar received seven awards, including lyricist Gulshan Bawra. Kalyanji Anandji was nominated but could not get the award.
Now he met director Govind Saraiya. He wanted to make a film on a Gujarati novel Saraswatichandra. Although the budget was very low, yet the Kalyanji brothers agreed to do the work. After all, it was a matter related to our Gujarati soil. This film was black and white. This time Kalyanji gave all the songs to his favorite Indeevar to write.
One day Anandji got tired of seeing the fan emails. Usually, he used to engage his assistant for this work. But that day he saw that a letter had come in the letter with only lipstick on the lips, kissed paper and a rose flower, apart from this nothing is written and it is not recorded that what is the address of the sender. Those times were not like today, Anandji was shocked to see elder brother Kalyanji coming, said "Look what someone has sent"
When Kalyanji saw it, his face also turned red. Even then he said, "Are you sitting with all this, leave it?" That's why the lyricist Indivar came. Kalyanji also showed them "Look brother, now even musicians have started getting such letters, tell me what should I do about it?" So Indivar said, "Hey Dhatt, you give this to us, a song can be made on it" and Indivar then hummed and said, "Flowers have been sent to you in the letter, my heart is not a flower." This song was kept in Saraswatichandra and this song It was such a bumper hit that it became the anthem of lovers.
The songs Chandan Sa Badan, and Chanchal Chitwan from the same film also became popular. This was the film where Kalyanji Duo's wait ended and they were not only awarded Filmfare but an even bigger, more respectable National Award and both the brothers felt that today, after 14 years, they are in the film industry. The arrival was successful.
After the National Award, Kalyanji Anandji got a flood of films. It is very important to mention Asit Sen's film Safar in this flood. Asit Sen was a very eccentric and technical man. He said that I didn't want to blur the screen while transitioning from one scene to another in the same song. Now tell me how will you do it? Although it was not the work of the musicians, Kalyanji was Kalyanji. He said, don't worry, at the end of an interval in the song, he would play the sound of a car horn somewhere, and at other places, he would show the chirping of a bird, and the camera would follow the flight of the same bird and the scene would change.
Listen to the songs of this film – 'Jeevan Se Bhari, Teri Aankhen' sung by Kishore Kumar in contrast to his Mast Maula style and the song became a super duper hit. Also 'Jo Tumko Ho Pasand' in Mukesh's voice became a bumper hit.
He then gave back-to-back superhit films including – Purab Aur Paschim, Mere Humsafar, Sacha Jhootha, Victoria No. 203, Zanjeer, and Kora Kagaz Ki. He was awarded the Filmfare Award for the first time in 1975 for Kora Kagaz.
Kalyanji Anandji always believed in giving chances to new artists. He gave the first chance to Manhar Udhas, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Pondwal, Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, Sapna Mukherjee and even Udit Narayan and Sunidhi Chauhan were given their first chances by Kalyanji Anandji.
Among lyricists, you know that Kalyanji was the one who gave the first break to Qamar Jalalabadi, Gulshan Bawra, Anjaan, and Anand Bakshi. She had learned this thing from Swar Kokila Lata Mangeshkar because Lata ji had accepted to sing the first song with her without any doubt or doubt and she also said after the recording that if there is any problem then she should feel free to tell me again. Come, I will come to record. But how could there be any problem with Kalyanji Anandji's music? Kalyanji Anandji was also honored with the Padma Shri award.
Kalyanji left this mortal world on August 24, 2000, leaving his brother alone but left behind more than one song, more than one tune, and a lot of courage to do something new for the upcoming musicians. Siddharth Arora 'City'
