Fame is a part of life and sometimes a two edged sword, it can cut to heal or it can cut to hurt and destroy. And nowhere is this truth more obvious than in the fickle world of hindi films - Ali Peter John

On the eve of Ganeshotsav, I spoke to five major film celebrities who have tasted fame and asked them what they thought about kamyabi in their life and their careers...

I was very lucky to be trained by my father Dr Harivanshrai Bachchan who was more than a teacher and a guru to me.

He taught me how not to take fame and success seriously, because they were just temporary phenomenon and could come and go anytime.

It was when I was very successful that he took me to a room and told me " Lalla, yeh sab aani jaani hain, ispar jyada dhyaan nahin dena.

Yeh kabhi tumhare dost nahin ban sakte. Sirf lagan se aur himmat se kaam karte raho, kamyabi tumhari pair chhuti rahegi."

I have been following these and have reached this place and I hope my children and my grandchildren follow the same principles. These principles are like the age old jadibutties which can never fail.

I had nothing but my hard work and my will to learn with me when I came to Bombay.

I kept falling and struggling and rising but I never gave up and that is what paid me in the long run.

I still work very hard and with same passion and sincerity at 79 and I'm still planning to make 3 films and expand the activities of my film school Whistling Woods International.

Fame is not the end but only the beginning of a man's struggle to reach the goals he wants to.

I never knew about high principles like achieving fame and working to achieve fame, my parents only kept asking me to work hard in whatever I was doing and that is what brought me fame.

I could have been spoilt by fame since I came from a lower middle class, but my education in a convent school helped me to maintain my balance and that is how I'm there where I'm today.

I have done more than what I had planned to do and now I want my sons Ryan and Arrin to succeed in whatever they want to do on their own terms, of course with the help of God and the blessings of their grandparents.

I still remember that night when I stood alone outside the Lucky Restaurant outside Bandra station and cried out in frustration that I would conquer Bombay one day.

Today, when I look back I don't think I have not reached anywhere near that manzil, but I have not given up focusing on my manzil and I shall inshallah I will atleast reach somewhere near that manzil one day.

Kabhi kabhi kamyabi hasil karne mein ek puri zindagi nikal jati hain, yeh baat main mere bacchon ko bhi sikhana chahta hoon, to shyad meri zindagi saphal hogi.

Shuru shuru mein log mujhe dhakke maar kar apne daftaro se bahar nikalte the ya extra ke role offer karte the, lekin jitni baar woh nikalte the, utni baar mera housla badh jaata tha.

Main raat mein akela rota tha lekin subah mein main khadi kurta aur pyajama pehan ke niklata tha ek nayi Jung ladhne ke liye aur shayad usike wajah se main aaj Anupam Kher hoon, nahin to main Anupam Kher kherwadi zopdewala hi rah jata...
