Khichdi is a famous television show that was first telecast on Star Plus in 2002, after which two more seasons of Khichdi came, and its last season came in 2018. Khichdi is a comedy story of a Gujarati family. The show became so popular that a film of it was released in 2010 named 'Khichdi: The Movie', and now after so many years, its sequel 'Khichdi 2' is being released this Diwali. Along with the old cast of the serial, some new cast will also be seen in the film. Supriya Pathak Kapoor, Rajeev Mehta, Anang Desai, Vandana Pathak, Jamnadas Majethia, and Kriti Kulhari will be seen in the lead roles in the film. Apart from these, Prateek Gandhi, Farah Khan, and Kiku Sharda will be seen in special appearances.
When the cast was asked a question on why Khichdi 2 took so long to come out, in response, Jamnadas ji said, “We had made two three scripts earlier also but it was not what we wanted. We wanted whatever script it was to be better than Khichdi. The script was good but not at the level we wanted. We wanted to give you double the entertainment, and we waited until we got the perfect script.”
Supriya Pathak ji says, “We ourselves also wanted to do Khichdi 2, and when we got a chance to do it, we did not miss that opportunity. We want everyone to laugh and be happy. We just bring you laughter and only laughter.”
Khichdi show started from the small screen, seeing its popularity, a film was made on it that is named, 'Khichdi: The Movie' and now after so many years, Khichdi 2 is coming on the big screen. When asked about this journey of Khichdi and when the reporter said that now it can be called Biryani and not Khichdi, this Supriya ji said, “It is Veg Biryani, and if we talk about the journey, then the journey of all of us together is very long and fun. Was. We have more fun behind the scenes than what you see on screen. For me, laughter is like a medicine. Whenever we are on the sets of Khichdi, we are happy, then we don't worry about anything else. That we have been able to be happy with each other for so long is amazing.” Taking forward Supriya ji's words, Babu Ji of Khichdi i.e. Anang Desai says, “Our journey has been very interesting, from television serial to Khichdi 2. We have a lot of fun backstage, and our bonding with each other is very good. This Diwali, through this film medium, we want to gift laughter to people.”
Jamnadas ji says, “Three generations have watched this show and enjoyed it. Khichdi was the show that brought the concept of seasons to India. Then when we brought the second season, we felt that its audience was increasing on TV, so we made a film on it, and that too was very good. And when the era of web series came, we made a web series. And now Khichdi 2 is coming.”
Talking about the journey of Khichdi, Rajeev Mehta says, “I had done comedy earlier but it was on stage. Actually, I am a theater artist. Khichdi has been the turning point of my career. My television career started with the show ‘Ek Mahal Hai Sapno Ka’. After that came Khichdi and then everything changed. While doing this show, I got to learn a lot as an actor. I consider myself very lucky that I am a part of this show.”
Talking about her journey, Vandana Pathak ji says, “In television, the script comes to you at the last moment, and in theatre, the script is given to you a month in advance, and you also have time to rehearse, but in serials, it is found at the last moment, so even remembering it becomes problematic. This serial has sharpened our memory and our mind has started working. Because from the beginning till now none of us had the script in our hands. Even in the beginning, when we used to meet for the serial, Aatish used to narrate the script as to what was going to happen in this month's episode. We just used to listen to him, see who said what and we used to remember it. Even during the filming, we did not take the script in hand. I think this is a very beautiful thing.”
Talking about the journey with this film, Kriti Kulhari said, “Khichdi was my first film in 2010. When I started out after doing theatre, I used to take everything very seriously. And when I met Aatish sir and I asked him how I should prepare for this, Aatish sir's reply was, just leave your mind at home and have fun. I like the idea that I don't have to do much preparation, I can do as much stupidity as I want during the scene on the set. From that time till today, I have done more projects, and the kind of character I am playing in those projects, I have developed such an image that I am a very serious actor, I play very serious characters. Many people have asked why you don't do comedy, and finally what everyone has been waiting for many years is coming. I have been a big fan of the entire Khichdi family. Khichdi has given me the confidence that I can do comedy again. I really enjoyed playing my character Parminder. I consider myself very lucky that I am a part of the Khichdi family, I want to thank all of you for making me a part of it.”
When Aatish was asked the question where the idea of writing this kind of comedy came from, Aatish said, “Someone told me that I do not know how to write for TV, so I thought it is okay, then I will write for TV. I show you, we will do exactly the opposite. We will write something such that even the audience will be surprised to see what this is. Every character is different, and all these characters have been lifted from real life.”
Talking about the film, Jamnadas Ji says, “Khichdi is a film which everyone will like. Khichdi 2 is a story that the entire family can watch together. Nowadays, in the era of social media, people remain busy with themselves, in that we are bringing a film where you three generations can sit together and watch the film. Jamnadas ji further says, “This Diwali we have only one mantra, laugh and laugh.” Jamnadas Ji says in a humorous manner, “If there is less laughter, then we will shave off Babu Ji’s mustache.”
When asked whether there is a fear while doing comedy that a character will become a stereotype, Aatish says, “We break the stereotypes, you must have seen in the show also the sister-in-law and sister-in-law who were shown fighting on TV or in films. It goes, we do not see anything like that in this, rather we show its opposite, where the sister-in-law takes great care of her sister-in-law, if anyone speaks wrong about her, she stands up against him.” Taking this answer further, Supriya Pathak ji says, “I don't think this happens in any of the houses that we show. At a time when TV serials are shown about extramarital affairs between husband and wife, we have shown Hansa and Praful, who have so much love between them, who think about each other.”
The entire cast of the film agrees with him, everyone believes that he has broken many stereotypes in this show. And there is no stereotype of any kind in his film Khichdi 2. When this question was asked that Khichdi came 21 years ago and there is a lot of difference between that time and today, people's sense of comedy has changed, then where does this confidence come from that what worked at that time will work even today. Responding to this, Aatish says, “To put it in very simple words, what is pure has nothing to do with time. We tried to create a purity where we humor ourselves. Just like gold is pure and does not change no matter how many years pass by, we have tried to make pure comedy in the same way.”
Jamnadas ji has described Khichdi as an adventure comedy because the name of the film is ‘Khichdi – Mission Paanthukhistan’. Jamnadas Ji said that there are two songs in this film.
