Expecting the unexpected was becoming a habit for distributers, the exhibitors and above all the entire Industry and the audience. The films he had made from Dharamputra onwards had more than proved his ability to spring up surprises with a wide variety of subjects, but he had created an image of the romantic filmmaker for himself and had never failed in this favourite subject he had directly or indirectly chosen for himself - Ali Peter John

But in the 90s, he surpassed the expectations of one and all when he announced a film called Darr. People asked how could this man who was so obsessed with love make a film about darr, but Yash chopra made it clear that he was making a film about a young man obsessed with his love for one woman and for whose love he could do anything, even kill.

Yash had got of the best writers of the time to write the script, but his real test came when it came to the casting. Which popular romantic hero would dare to play a hero who could go on a rampage and attempt to kill for his love? Yash Chopra first signed Sunny Deol but he was not sure whether he would like Sunny to play the role of Rahul, who is a lover and also a killer.

He then approached Ajay Devgan for the same role and after giving it a lot of thought Ajay rejected the offer. Amir Khan was the next to be offered the role and he too who was not scared of doing any kind of role turned down the role for fear of being branded as a negative hero.

As a last ditch effort, Yash offered the role to Sanjay dutt and when Sanjay too turned down the offer, Yash wondered whether he should make the film...

It was at this stage that a new actor called Shahrukh Khan was growing popular for his negative roles in films like Bazigar, Deewana and Anjaam. He once just walked into the office of Yash Chopra and Yash casually told him about the role he had in Darr and this new actor Shahrukh Khan was only too glad to accept the role and the role as a he played it went on to become a cult role and the film became a cult film.

Beside the performance of Shahrukh, the film also had good and almost outstanding performances from Juhi Chawla, Sunny Deol and even Anupam Kher.

The songs and the music turned out to be major highlight and so were the action scenes and the Holi song which was like all the Holi songs of Yash Chopra an integral part of the story.

The regular distributors of Yash Chopra were a little scared of releasing the film, but some of them showed their courage and released the film in a few theatres and once the film was released, it was like a raging fire and Yash Chopra became a greater filmmaker and an all-rounder and if one person benefited from the film the most, it was Shahrukh Khan who mesmerized Yash Chopra so much that he went on to do all his other films till his last film ' Jab tak hai jaan'.

Pyar se to har koi jeet ta hai, lekin Darr se bhi koi jeet ta hai, ye sach Yash Chopra ne kaayi saal pehle sabit kiya tha aur wo sach Aaj bhi sach hai...
