The achievements and interventions of the project, made in marginalised handloom clusters in Assam for areas such as Barkhetri (Nalbari) and Rampur (Kamrup) towards sustainable production and development, were presented in association with implementation partner GoCoop and the United Nations in India. Anita Dongre’s Grassroot label and Raymond, in collaboration with Antar-Agni, had Eri and Muga textiles hand-woven by artisans in these clusters, that were showcased during Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2019. For the UN in India, the APONIR initiative is aimed at empowering women through sustainable livelihoods so they can support themselves and their families. With more than million handloom workers in the North East, the region has great potential to act as a catalyst for sustainable fashion. Anita Dongre Collection ANITA DONGRE’S GRASSROOT COLLECTION Anita Dongre’s ‘Grassroot’ label’s line was an initiative for the Sustainable Development for Northeast India. As always, the ‘Grassroot’ label has been inspired by the term “Fashion with a Purpose” and for this collection too, Anita chose hand-spun fabrics from small clusters in Rampur near Guwahati. This was done to help the artisans in improving their livelihoods and offer them employment opportunities with more economic growth. Anita Dongre Collection The beautiful fabrics woven from Eri, Muga and Matka fibres, were the base for the eye-catching ensembles, which were highlighted with block printing and embroidery. Anita brought her distinct designing skills to the forefront with a mix of ethnic wear in a delicate combo of ivory and gold. The line was aimed at the months ahead when the rising mercury requires cool garments. There was a splash of summer blossoms that appeared for prints and embellishments to highlight the garments. Anita’s favourite Gotta Patti work with a hint of sequins was used discreetly to give a gentle sparkle and shimmer on the garments. The fine silk from Assam looked resplendent for the outfits as the models glided down the runway in the ethereal creations. There was a mélange of kurtas, loose pants, shararas, lehengas, anarkalis and long slim kurtas with flowing tulle palazzos and dupattas that looked captivating on the ramp. ANTAR AGNI IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE STORY RESPUN- RAYMOND Antar Agni’s design sensibilities came to centre stage when the collection by Ujjawal Dubey, in association with Raymond unveiled the capsule line that took the Sustainable Development of Northeast India onto a higher fashion level. The programme’s aim is to strengthen the livelihood of the artisans of that region and provide the market more opportunities. Anita Dongre Collection The “Story Respun – Raymond”, is a pledge by Raymond to help rejuvenate traditional Indian craft by collaborating with artisans and designers to create products that are relevant and compelling for consumers of today. As a part of this initiative, over the last two years, design and technical teams from Raymond have worked extensively with Khadi and Handloom clusters, across the country to give the fabric of our nation a whole new face and form, while keeping its soul intact. The collection called “Balance” was created form the beautiful fabrics woven by the artisans based in Assam. Fibres like cotton; Eri, Tussar and Muga silk were beautifully turned into luxurious fabrics, dappled with classic Indian motifs, which, at times glittered with zari work. Anita Dongre Collection The silhouettes followed the Antar Agni trademark route and therefore, were contemporary in a colour story that started with basic neutrals like ivory, grey and then moved onto a slightly brighter-plane, with shots of green and citrine. The basic Indian shapes like kurtas, low-crotch pants, bundgalas, bundies and layered shirt kurtas appeared with unconventional detailing that had the distinct Antar Agni stamp.
