The year 2024 turned out to be a mixed experience for Bollywood. While some films performed spectacularly at the box office, others did not meet the expectations of both audiences and critics. The biggest success of the year came from the horror-comedy genre, which became a new benchmark of popularity. These films not only struck a great balance between horror and comedy but also redefined the entertainment experience for viewers.

On the other hand, several star-studded films failed to live up to expectations. Although these films benefitted from their star power, they couldn't achieve significant box office success due to weak storylines or direction. Overall, 2024 witnessed a wide range of films, from traditional genres to newer ones, becoming topics of discussion, but some films couldn’t deliver as expected. Let's take a closer look at how the 2024 box office fared.

2024: The Year of Horror-Comedy

Stree 2

It would not be wrong to say that 2024 was the year of horror-comedy films. Two of the biggest hits of the year came from this genre. The most successful film was Stree 2, which emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024. It earned 605.8 crores in India and around 840 crores worldwide.

The second big hit was Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, starring Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, and Madhuri Dixit. This film earned 268.2 crores in India and 405.41 crores worldwide. In addition, Munja, a film with a budget of 30 crores, starring Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Verma, made an impressive 105.3 crores at the box office.

Big Stars, Big Disappointments

Despite starring some of the biggest names in Bollywood, many films failed to live up to expectations at the box office. One such example is Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. With a budget of 350 crores, the film only managed to earn 64.7 crores in India and 105.75 crores worldwide.

Another big-budget film, Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty and featuring more than half a dozen superstars, grossed just 250 crores in India, with a worldwide total of 389.64 crores. The film's budget was around 400 crores. Alia Bhatts action film Jigra, made on a budget of 80 crores, also struggled, earning only 30.69 crores domestically and 56.93 crores worldwide.

 Indian 2

This year, films like Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, Junior NTR’s Devara Part One, Varun Dhawan’s Baby John (released on December 25), and many others such as Maidaan, Thangalan, Sarafira, Yodha, Mary Christmas, Veda, Khel Khel Mein, The Buckingham Murders, and Yariyan 2 failed to create much of an impact at the box office.

 The Trend of Re-Releases

In 2024, it wasn’t just one or two films that were re-released, but a whole series of them. Some of these re-releases even performed better than their original box office runs. Films like Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (starring R. Madhavan and Dia Mirza), Kal Ho Naa Ho, Rockstar, Karan Arjun, Veer-Zaara, Khosla Ka Khosla, and others were re-released in 2024. Among these, Tumbbad (which didn’t perform well during its original release) grossed 30.4 crores, and Laila Majnu earned 5.8 crores.

 Biopics Fail to Impress

Several biopics and films based on real-life events hit the theatres in 2024, but they failed to make an impact with the audience. Among these were Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, Pankaj Tripathi’s Main Atal Hoon, and Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion, all of which underperformed.

Franchise Films Dominate

Franchise films continued their dominance in 2024. The most successful of these was Pushpa 2: The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, which grossed a staggering 1760 crores. Other successful sequels included Stree 2 (600 crores) and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which also performed remarkably well.

Director Anees Bazmee of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 commented, “Sequels benefit from the trust and love built by their predecessors, but you also have to deliver a good film. If one part fails, it hurts not just the movie but the entire franchise.”

The trends in 2024 highlight that franchise films and the horror-comedy genre took center stage. Additionally, re-released films also received a positive response from audiences. It is clear that while 2023 was dominated by action films, 2024 saw audiences embracing the horror-comedy space.
