Akshay Kumar Pays Tribute to Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak (Toilet Man of India)

Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, born on 2 April 1943 in Hajipur, Bihar, is also called Toilet Man of India. Bindeshwar Pathak, who studied sociology, did a lot of work for the welfare of society.

Bindeshwar Pathak: Champion of Social Reform and Sanitation

It is Bindeshwar Pathak who founded Sulabh International. Sulabh International is an India-based social service organization that promotes human rights, environmental cleanliness, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management, and social reforms through education. Let us tell you that Pathak was also the brand ambassador of the Clean Rail Mission of Indian Railways. While working with this organization, he got the work of constructing toilets not only in his area but also in different areas of the country. Not only this, he freed the manual scavengers from their work and also worked for their progress. He received various national and international awards for his work with this organization. He was awarded the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for excellence in public administration, education, and management for the year 2017. He was posthumously awarded India's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2024 and India's third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, in 1991.

Recently, during a Swachh Bharat event of News India, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who has worked in cleanliness-based films like 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha', and 'Padman', was present and praised the work done by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. 

Akshay says, “Dr Bindeshwar Pathak started Sulabh International in 1970, and since then this organization has met the needs of millions of Indians every day. Sulabh International has so far constructed more than 13 lakh domestic toilets and more than one million public toilets. In 2017, before the release of Meri Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, I got a chance to meet Bindeshwar Ji. He invited me to the Sulabh program in Delhi, where he gave me such information related to toilets that I was astonished. Apart from the new technology of the toilet, I also saw the use of bio-gas closely. Apart from this, I also got the opportunity to meet sanitation workers whose lives he had completely changed. In fact, after seeing the poor condition of these sanitation workers in the 1960s, he vowed to provide accessible sanitation facilities to all the people of the society. He faced opposition during his mission but he never gave up and continued the work for the welfare of the backward people in the society forever. Today, when we are honoring the legacy of Bindeshwar Pathak, let us remember the good works done by him. At the same time, take a pledge to continue their good works. The work of Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak shows how the efforts of one person can impact the well-being of millions. We hope that the legacy of Bindeshwar ji will always inspire all of us to give equal rights to each other and stand with each other.”
