Once popular across India as Radio Ceylon, Sri Lanka’s radio service Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) completed 100 years this week. It was officially launched on December 16, 1925, and is regarded as Asia’s first commercial shortwave radio station. Initially a part of the Department of Telecommunications, it was reorganised as Radio Ceylon in 1949 and was renamed Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in 1967. The programme that brought Radio Ceylon immense popularity in India was Binaca Geetmala, which was broadcast from 1952 to 1988. Every week at exactly 8 pm, millions of listeners tuned in to hear Ameen Sayani’s iconic greeting, “Bhaiyon aur Behno.” The programme later moved to All India Radio’s Vividh Bharati service in 1989. SLBC houses Asia’s largest music archive, with over 70,000 rare recordings. At one time, the massive volume of fan mail received from India made PO Box 574, Colombo, a legendary address. Although the form of radio has changed over the years, the legacy of Radio Ceylon continues to live on in the hearts of its listeners. |
