Anurag Kashyap said in an interview, “The idea came from a true story, but obviously we had to walk very fine lines. You don't know who is right and who is wrong. The new laws were being misused a lot, in which a woman, with the help of a lawyer and a policeman, filed eight different cases in eight different police stations.”

The project came about when producer Nikhil Dwivedi gave him a newspaper article about a real-life case. Dwivedi says, “As a filmmaker, I enjoy different kinds of stories.
