Born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar's family relocated to Delhi during the Partition. He adopted the screen name 'Manoj Kumar' inspired by Dilip Kumar's character in the film 'Shabnam' (1949). ​

Manoj Kumar made his acting debut with "Fashion" in 1957. He gained prominence with films like "Hariyali Aur Rasta" (1962) and "Woh Kaun Thi?" (1964). He ventured into direction with "Upkar" (1967), inspired by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri's slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan." Other notable films include "Purab Aur Paschim" (1970), "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan" (1974), and "Kranti" (1981). ​
