One of the most awaited Indian films of the year 2024 was Kanguva directed by Siruthai Siva. The buzz was insane, especially because of the versatile star cast with Tamil superstar Suriya in a double role, alongside Bollywood beauty Disha Patani and Bobby Deol in his Tamil debut as the villain. After seeing Bobby lock horns with Ranbir Kapoor in Animal (2023), fans obviously had high expectations from him. However, the epic fantasy action film failed to impress and bombed at the box-office, earning just a third of its budget. So you can imagine the shock it must have caused among netizens when Kanguva became a top contender for Oscars 2025.

Kanguva's OTT Debut After Disappointing Box Office Run

Yes, you read it right. Within a month of its release and after a disappointing box office performance, Kanguva took the digital route and hit OTT. Despite being one of the most expensive Indian films ever made with a budget of ₹300-350 crores, it grossed ₹106 crores and ended up being a dud and now, it is reportedly competing with films like Shuchi Talati's Girls Will Be Girls (2024) and Payal Kapadia's critically acclaimed All We Imagine As Light (2024), which received two nominations at the Golden Globes 2025.

As reported by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 323 feature films have been deemed eligible for the 97th Academy Awards, of which 207 films meet the requirements for the Best Picture category. There are 6 names of Indian films in this list - Kanguva (Tamil), Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life (Hindi), Santosh (Hindi), Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (Hindi), All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam-Hindi) and Girls Will Be Girls (Hindi-English). While fans are happy, most netizens want to know why Kanguva, a box-office bomb, made it to this prestigious list.
