He has starred in some of the most successful films of Hindi cinema such as Mr. India, Tridev, Ghayal, Khiladi, Ghulam, Duplicate, Soldier, Baghban, Fanaa, Krrish, Ek Hi Raasta (1993), Bajrangi Bhaijaan and many others. His performances in these films have established him as one of the best-supporting actors in Bollywood. He played the role of Keechak in the television serial Mahabharat. He is best known for his role as Daaga in the Hindi film Mr. India and Totla Seth in the popular comedy film Phir Hera Pheri. He was also nominated for the Filmfare Best Villain Award for Ghulam (1998).
