Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez has received a major setback from the Delhi High Court in the ongoing ₹200 crore money laundering case linked to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar. On Thursday, the court dismissed her plea seeking the quashing of the FIR and the second supplementary chargesheet filed against her by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
What Is the Case About?
The case revolves around Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who is accused of extorting hundreds of crores from high-profile individuals, including Aditi Singh, the wife of a major industrialist. As per the ED’s investigation, Sukesh used these illegally obtained funds to buy luxury gifts—including expensive cars, designer bags, and jewelry—for Jacqueline Fernandez.
The value of these gifts runs into crores. Jacqueline is accused of knowingly or unknowingly accepting assets acquired from proceeds of crime, making her a subject of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) probe.
Why the High Court Rejected Jacqueline’s Plea
Justice Anish Dayal of the Delhi High Court dismissed Jacqueline’s petition after observing that the special PMLA court had already taken cognizance of the chargesheet, and a prima facie case of money laundering against her exists.
Moreover, the court noted that Jacqueline had not challenged the cognizance order earlier. The ED’s counsel argued that the plea was legally untenable and that the matter must now proceed before the trial court.
Jacqueline Fernandez’s Defense
Jacqueline’s legal team claimed she had no knowledge of Sukesh Chandrasekhar’s criminal activities at the time of accepting the gifts. They stated that even when media reports surfaced in 2019, she did not suspect the depth of Sukesh’s crimes. The actress maintains that she did not knowingly participate in any criminal activity and that any lapse in judgment should not be treated as an offence under money laundering laws.
Her counsel argued that receiving gifts from a person she was in contact with doesn’t constitute a criminal act unless there’s proven intent.
What Happens Next?
Now that the Delhi High Court has dismissed her plea, Jacqueline will have to face trial proceedings in the lower court. She has already been questioned multiple times by the ED, and the investigation remains active.
This case has become a major talking point in Bollywood, highlighting how celebrities' associations can entangle them in serious legal trouble. With more twists expected in the coming weeks, all eyes are now on Jacqueline’s next legal move.
