Why did you call the producer a fool?

Chandni Bar

One such film was Chandni Bar (2001), which marked Madhur Bhandarkar's hit entry into Bollywood. Chandni Bar, starring Tabu, was the story of a bar dancer and showcased the tough life of the Mumbai underworld, sex work, and gun crime. However, when the film released, Madhur was actually sleeping at home. It was director Mahesh Bhatt who inspired him to gauge the crowd's reaction, go to theatres, and bring his first hit film to life.

'You are a crazy, stupid man. Your film is a blockbuster. Talking about the incident with Komal Nahta on the Gamechanger podcast, Madhur said, 'I remember I was sleeping on the carpet under a fan on the floor of my 1BHK, I didn't even have an AC then. Around 2 pm, Mahesh Bhatt sahab called me. I had met him 2-3 times before. He asked me, 'Madhuri, where are you?' I was feeling sleepy so I said I am at home. He abused me and said, 'You are a crazy, stupid man. Your film is a blockbuster, it is such a huge hit, and you are sleeping. Go and see the crowds outside the theatres. You won't get such milestones again and again.'

So I got very excited. I said sorry to them, and ran like the fire brigade had sounded the alarm,' said Madhur. Madhur told how we first went to Gaiety Galaxy and Star City cinema theatres, which were running housefull. No one knew him at that time, so he could freely ask people if they liked the film or not. He was happy to know that the audience was responding positively to his film. He then called Mahesh and alerted him. "I needed that pep talk. He was absolutely right. People want to see such big hits. You don't see such films every day," said Madhur.
