Manish Malhotra confirmed in an interview last year that he is going to direct Meena Kumari's biopic. When asked about the news of him directing Meena Kumari's biopic, he said, "I don't know how it came up but it is happening. We are still working on the script. The script is always important. Manish Malhotra said this

"My dream with Stage 5 was to start a different story, which was not expected of me," emphasized Manish Malhotra. "Hopefully I will cast Kareena Kapoor Khan or any young girl with a lot of glamour in my films. But it is not an extension of my brand. I can tell a glamorous story anytime. But the most important thing is the script because I want to focus on telling a good story through my films." Malhotra's production venture, Saali Mohabbat, is an entertaining thriller directed by Tisca Chopra and features talented actors like Radhika Apte, Divyendu, and Anurag Kashyap. The story of the film is its strongest aspect, and Malhotra is proud to back a project that breaks boundaries and challenges conventional storytelling.

I just wanted it to be mine, whether it's good, bad or ugly."
