Meena Kumari Land Dispute:
An order has been issued in favour of Bollywood's late veteran actress Meena Kumari and her husband Kamal Amrohi . In fact, in a legal dispute going on for more than three decades, a local court in Mumbai has ordered a housing society to vacate the land (Meena Kumari land) leased from Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari in Bandra in 1966.
The court ordered the society to vacate within 6 months
Let us tell you that the appellate bench of the Small Causes Court in Bandra ruled in favour of Amrohi's son Tajdar Amrohi and ordered the 162-member society to hand over possession of the land in the posh Pali Hill area within six months. This order was passed on April 23.
The Chief Justice said this
Additional Chief Justice Ashish Ayachit and Justice D R Mali held that the society had failed to pay the contracted rent regularly and hence had defaulted in payment. The court order said, "The society has deliberately violated the terms of the lease contract regarding payment of the contracted rent. The defendant society was not ready and willing to pay the arrears of rent and they failed to comply with the provision of Section 12 of the Bombay Rent Act. Therefore, the plaintiffs are entitled to an order of eviction".
Meena Kumari bought this property in 1959
For your information, let us tell you that Meena Kumari married Amrohi in 1952 and the couple bought more than 11,000 square yards of land in Pali Hill in suburban Bandra in 1959. The land was leased to Cozyhome Co-operative Housing Society Limited in 1966 for construction of buildings at a rent of ₹8,835 per month. In 1990, Amrohi terminated the lease agreement claiming that the society had not paid the fixed rent and defaulted on the payment. A year later, he filed a suit seeking to evict the society and take possession of the land. Subsequently, in October 2007, the Small Causes Court in Bandra passed an order in favour of Amrohi and passed an eviction order against the society, which challenged the order before the appellate bench. The appellate bench has held that the trial court's order of eviction was "fair and correct".
