In an effort to raise awareness about road safety, NewsNasha organized the "Road Rakshak" initiative at The Park Hotel, New Delhi. The event was graced by the esteemed presence of the Senior Cabinet Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the audience, Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of road safety and stressed the need for collective responsibility in adhering to road safety regulations. He urged everyone to abide by traffic rules, stating that fear of the law should motivate compliance, whether it's stopping at red lights or following speed limits.

Nitin Gadkari Urges Action on Road Safety

Highlighting the alarming statistics of road accidents in India, Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasized the urgent need for action. He recounted his own accident in 2004, underscoring the importance of attention to detail in preventing accidents. Additionally, representatives from leading automobile companies like Hero MotoCorp and Mahindra shared their insights and pledged support for road safety initiatives.

The "Road Rakshak" initiative aims to significantly reduce fatalities from road accidents and provide solutions for prevention. The initiative seeks to instill a sense of responsibility among youth to prioritize safety while driving and crossing roads.

The event saw participation from various sponsors, including Kinetic Energy, Nexzon Energy, ChargeCar, and QRT Auto Private Limited, among others. Shri Nitin Gadkari honored all sponsors for their significant contributions to road safety initiatives.

As we reflect on the gravity of the road safety issue in India, the following statistics compel serious consideration:

1. Approximately 80,000 people die in road accidents in India every year, accounting for 13% of global fatalities.
2. Globally, around 1.35 million people lose their lives in road accidents annually.
3. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for 2022, India witnesses 462 deaths daily from 1,263 road accidents, translating to 19 deaths every hour.
4. A significant portion (78%) of road accident fatalities and injuries in India affects economically productive age groups, i.e., individuals aged 15 to 64 years.
5. The ratio of fatalities among males and females aged 15 to 49 years due to road accidents in India is 3:1.
6. The leading cause of road accident deaths in India is overspeeding, accounting for 71.2% of fatalities in 2022.
7. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists comprise 68% of fatalities on highways.
8. Road accidents are the leading cause of death among children and young adults aged 5 to 29 worldwide.
