Ram Gopal Verma Case: The director of iconic films like Rangeela, Satya, Company, and Sarkar, is once again in the headlines. However, this time it’s not because of a new film, but due to a legal issue he’s embroiled in. The case is related to a cheque bounce, and the court has sentenced him to three months in jail. In response, Ram Gopal Verma has filed a petition seeking bail and the suspension of his sentence. He claimed that he wasn’t present in the court when the verdict was delivered on January 21st. However, the court clarified that passing a judgment in the absence of an accused is not illegal.
Ram Gopal Verma Case: Court’s Statement
After Ram Gopal Verma’s petition, the case was recently heard. The magistrate, while delivering the order, said “The accused, Ram Gopal Verma, repeatedly delayed the case instead of exercising his right to defense. The complainant was given ample opportunities to receive payment, from the time the complaint was filed until the conclusion of the case, but the payment was never made.” The court further noted that the accused’s absence did not render the conviction illegal, as the Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) allows this procedure.
The magistrate added, “It was necessary to punish the accused after issuing the cheque but intentionally failing to make the payment. This would deter others from engaging in such careless behavior in the future.” (Ram Gopal Verma Case)
What’s the Full Story?
The entire case dates back to 2018 when a company named 'Shri' filed a cheque bounce case against Ram Gopal Verma’s company. The company alleged that Verma’s company had failed to pay the dues.
The lawyers of the complainant company, Rajesh Kumar Patel and Alok Singh, submitted an affidavit in court. They mentioned that 'Shri' company had supplied hard disks to Ram Gopal Verma’s company between February and March 2018, for which a bill of Rs. 2,38,220 was raised (Ram Gopal Verma Case). However, when the complainant deposited the cheque issued by Verma on June 1, 2018, it bounced due to insufficient funds. Verma then issued a second cheque, but it bounced again because the payment was stopped. Ram Gopal Verma claimed that the cheque wasn’t signed by him and he had not issued it.
Now, the court has issued a notice to the complainant, and the next hearing has been scheduled for next month. It remains to be seen how the sessions court will rule on his petition.
