Rohit Shetty is currently enjoying the success of his latest cop film 'Singham Again'. Released on November 1, the film has crossed the 200-crore mark domestically. Also, the action film made the filmmaker the fastest to cross the 100 crore mark. Now, as he moves forward with his stellar cop universe, the director has confirmed the franchise's first standalone female cop film 'Lady Singham' with Deepika Padukone.
Will Deepika Padukone have a standalone film?
The cinematic universe began with Ajay Devgn's 2011 blockbuster film 'Singham'. Without any planning, Shetty created his own cop universe by making 'Sooryavanshi' and 'Simmba'. His recent title 'Singham Again' is the fifth title under his cop universe and the third film in the 'Singham' film series. The filmmaker has already roped in Salman Khan's Chulbul Pandey for his next film 'Chulbul Singham' opposite Ajay Devgn. Now, Deepika Padukone's Shakti Singh's standalone film is also in the news.
In a conversation with News18 Showsha, the filmmaker shared details about the project. Rohit Shetty elaborated on why he waited so long to bring a female police officer in the film industry. Talking about this, he said, "The wait was to get the right script and the right kind of opening for the character. Till 2018, I was not even sure if the police world would happen or not." He said that he got the idea of coming up with Lady Singham during the making of Akshay Kumar's 'Sooryavanshi'. "When Simmba worked, people accepted that we could bring other characters and create a world. That's when we made Sooryavanshi and during this film, we thought of making a film with a great female police officer."
Have you thought of the title?
Updating on the status of the project, the filmmaker reiterated that the title is definitely on the cards. "We still have to write it. We have a concept in mind, but we don't know where we can take it. There is still time for that. I know what the character will be like and what her origin story will be, but I don't know her entire journey as a director or writer yet. But a female-led cop film with Lady Singham in the lead role will definitely happen, otherwise, we wouldn't have introduced her. That's why we have insisted on that character and her name in Singham Again."
