Chennai Express is a 2013 Indian action comedy film directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment. Meanwhile, filmmaker Rohit Shetty, who worked with Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in Chennai Express, talked about the initial difficulties faced while making the film.
Rohit Shetty said this about the film
Let us tell you that in an interview, Rohit Shetty recalled the process of pitching the project to Shah Rukh and the difficulty Deepika faced in polishing her acting. In fact, in an interview with casting director Mukesh Chhabra on Mashable India, Rohit was shown a scene of Shah Rukh and Deepika from the film, which inspired him to tell this story. He said that Shah Rukh Khan approached him for collaboration after being impressed with his work and initially they were going to work together on the remake of Angoor. But then Rohit remembered an old script that was lying with him since 2008, which remained unpublished because no young actor was interested in doing it. He secretly rewrote the script to suit an aged hero and took it to Shah Rukh, who said that he only wanted to work with him, no matter what the project was.
Rohit spoke about Deepika
Shah Rukh took the final decision on the script, and work continued on it. Rohit Shetty recalled that Deepika was giving back-to-back flops at that time and it took her a few days to get into the groove. He said, "It took a lot of time. Especially in comedy, even established actors take time to get into it. We started shooting with Deepika, we shot for four days and on the fourth day she got the hang of the accent. Actors are usually conscious about how they are coming across, but when they are free from these worries, only then they start acting."
We shot the last four days again- Rohit Shetty
Rohit Shetty further added, "It took four days and on the fourth day we felt we had done it. Even Shah sir realized we were on the right track and we shot the last four days again. Then he started liking it and it reached a different level."
Chennai Express was released in the year 2013
Chennai Express released in 2013 and despite mixed reviews, turned out to be a huge box office hit. It was Rohit's first film to cross the Rs 400 crore mark globally, a feat he repeated a few years later with Simmba. He worked with Shah Rukh once again in Dilwale, which was a little less successful critically and commercially. Rohit's latest film Singham Again has so far collected over Rs 350 crore globally.
