The first meeting of the RSS was held at Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar’s (Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar) residence, with only 17 participants. Many of them continued to serve the organization for years. Today, that house has become a center of faith for volunteers, who visit to recall the early days. RSS celebrates its foundation day on Vijayadashami (Dussehra) every year, with path marches held across the country.

RSS is a cultural, social, and nationalist organization that aims to organize and empower the Hindu society, promote national unity, and preserve the values of Indian culture. It is not a religious organization. Daily branches conduct a one-hour program including physical exercise, sports, patriotic songs, discussions on national interests, speeches, and prayers for the motherland.

RSS was founded on 27th September 1925, Vijayadashami, by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar (Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar) in Nagpur. Dr. Hedgewar was previously active in the Congress and served as the president of the Central Provinces, but he left Congress to form the RSS with the goal of creating an organized platform for Hindu awareness and nation service in independent India.

The organization was banned three times, but each time it emerged stronger. On 6th January 1948, Sardar Patel (Sardar Patel) said on the radio, “RSS volunteers are patriots.”

In 2025, marking 100 years, RSS has begun its centenary celebrations starting from Dussehra. From 2nd October 2025 to 20th October 2026, seven major programs will be held nationwide. These events aim to showcase RSS’s century-long journey, current challenges, and solutions to society.

The commemorative coin and stamp released on the 100th anniversary of the RSS not only preserve the organization’s legacy but also inspire citizens with the values of national service, discipline, and dedication.
