Anil Gami, 66, one of her students at Zakir Hussain College, where she taught as a substitute lecturer for a year, fondly remembers Maheshwari as both a teacher and a newsreader. Gami said, “Most people remember her as a newsreader, but for me, she was a wonderful teacher. She taught us for a year before becoming a permanent faculty member at Hansraj. Despite being a Gujarati, she had a very good command of Hindi.”
Who was Sarla Maheshwari?
Sarla was a well-known anchor on Doordarshan in the 1970s and 1980s. She was one of the first news anchors to present live news on Indian television. She began her career as a news announcer with Doordarshan in 1976, while pursuing her PhD and applying for a news anchor position.
