Popularly known as the "Kanta Laga Girl", actress and model Shefali Jariwala passed away due to a cardiac arrest on June 27, 2024, at the age of 42. Her sudden demise has left fans and the Indian music industry in shock.
A Legacy Forever Tied to 'Kanta Laga'
Shefali shot to fame in 2002 with the remix video of "Kanta Laga", which became an iconic pop culture moment in India. Known for her bold style and vibrant screen presence, Shefali had expressed a desire to be remembered for this song alone.
Directors Announce No Remake or Sequel
Respecting her legacy, Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the directors of the original video, announced that they will not create a sequel or remake of the iconic track. “This was Shefali’s wish,” they stated, emphasizing her connection to the original.
Sona Mohapatra Slams Directors Over 'PR Gimmick'
Controversy erupted when singer Sona Mohapatra criticized the decision, calling it a “PR stunt” using Shefali’s death. She reminded everyone that the song was originally crafted by legends like R.D. Burman, Majrooh Sultanpuri, and Lata Mangeshkar.
“Is this really the legacy of a 42-year-old woman?” she questioned.
“She starred in a remix video made by people who now call themselves ‘creators’.”
Social Media Divided
Sona’s comments sparked debate. Some users backed her claim, citing how the real music creators are often forgotten. Others found her timing and words insensitive, arguing that Shefali’s memory should be honored without controversy.
In her defense, Sona posted again, asking, “Are we okay with forgetting musical legends like Lata ji and Burman saab? Is it right to use someone's death as a publicity opportunity?”
