Veteran Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal died on Monday evening at the age of 90. The filmmaker, famous for his unique films like 'Ankur', 'Manthan' and 'Mandi', suffered from kidney disease for a long time. His death has caused a wave of mourning in the film industry. At the same time, many well-known personalities including the Prime Minister and the President have expressed grief over the death of Shyam Benegal. His last rites will be performed today.

Prime Minister Modi remembered Shyam Benegal 

In a post on Twitter, the Prime Minister said, "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Shyam Benegal ji, whose gifted storytelling had a profound impact on Indian cinema. His work will always be admired by people from across walks of life. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti."

President Draupadi Murmu expressed condolences


President Draupadi Murmu condoled the death of veteran Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal. She wrote, "The demise of Shri Shyam Benegal marks the end of a glorious chapter in Indian cinema and television. He ushered in a new kind of cinema and made many classic films. As a true institution, he groomed many actors and artistes. His exceptional contribution was recognised with many awards including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan. My condolences to his family members and his countless fans."

National Award-winning actor Manoj Bajpayee wrote a long note remembering the legend on his X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “A heartbreaking loss for Indian cinema. Shyam Benegal was not just a legend, he was a visionary who redefined the art of storytelling and inspired generations. Working with him in Zubeidaa was a transformative experience for me, which exposed me to his unique style of storytelling and nuanced understanding of performances. I will always be grateful for the lessons I learnt under his direction. It was an honour to have had the opportunity to work with him. His legacy will live on in the stories he told and the lives he touched. Rest in peace Shyam Babu, Om Shanti”.

Akshay Kumar also paid tribute and wrote, "Sad to know about the demise of Shyam Benegal ji. One of the finest filmmakers of our country, truly a legend. Om Shanti"

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur remembered Benegal for changing the "direction of Indian cinema" with films like Ankur and Manthan. "He made stars of great actors like Shabnam Azmi and Smita Patil. Goodbye my friend and mentor," he wrote.

Actress Kajol wrote, "So sad to hear about the passing of the great Shyam Benegal. His contribution to Indian cinema is incomparable and his legacy will live on through his incredible work." 


Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra wrote, "If there is one thing Shyam Benegal has expressed best, it is the poetry of ordinary faces and ordinary lives. A lot will be written about Shyam Benegal, but for me very few people talk about the fact that there was in his films a lamentation and a sadness of the fact that we were not living in the best of all possible worlds".

Veteran Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Shyam Benegal, one of our country's finest filmmakers and a great intellectual. He discovered and nurtured some of India's brightest film talents. His films, biographies and documentaries are part of India's greatest cultural heritage!! A Hyderabadi and former Rajya Sabha Member, Benegal Saab's outstanding works will always be highly respected in Indian Cinema! Rest in Peace Sir". 

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared a photo of the late filmmaker on his Instagram. He wrote in the caption, "The last of our great filmmakers. Stay healthy Shyam Babu. Thank you for inspiring so many like me. Thank you cinema. Thank you for giving such wonderful dignity to difficult stories and flawed characters."
