Vijay Jana Nayagan: South superstar Vijay Thalapathy Vijay's last film, "Jana Nayagan," is in the news due to controversies. Even before its release, a hearing is underway in the Madras High Court regarding the film (Jana Nayagan controversy). What decision did the Madras High Court give?

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, a division bench of the Madras High Court delivered a significant ruling while hearing a petition filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The court overturned a single judge's order directing the CBFC to immediately issue a censor certificate to the film "Jana Nayakan ." The High Court stated that the single judge should have given the CBFC sufficient time to respond. The bench also noted that KVN Productions LLP's petition only sought a certificate for the film's theatrical release and did not challenge the CBFC Chairperson's decision to refer the film to a Revising Committee. However, the single judge overturned the Chairperson's order.

Why is 'Jana Nayagan' facing hurdles in getting a certificate?

The film was originally scheduled for release on January 9th, coinciding with the Pongal festival. However, a few days before its release, the CBFC informed the film's production company, KVN Productions, that it had received a complaint against the film, based on which the film was referred to a review committee. The CBFC's rule is that a film cannot be released in theaters until it receives a certification from the board.

The journey of 'Jana Nayakan' from a single bench to the Supreme Court

The producers then approached the Madras High Court, where a single judge granted them relief and ordered the CBFC to issue a 'U/A' certificate after making the specified changes to the film. However, the CBFC appealed this order to a division bench of the High Court. The division bench stayed the single bench's order. The producers also approached the Supreme Court for immediate relief, but on January 15, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition and sent the case back to the Madras High Court. Now, following the High Court's latest decision, the film's future remains uncertain.
