When Dilip Kumar broke this promise to Saira Banu by marrying Asma

Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu have given a new definition to love for Bollywood. Saira Banu even quit acting in Bollywood and devoted herself to her marriage. However, there came a time in their life when their marriage cracked for some time. In his autobiography, The Substance and the Shadow, Dilip Kumar has confirmed that 16 years after marrying Saira Banu, he was briefly married to Asma Rehman.

Dilip Kumar had promised Saira Banu that he would not marry again

Let us tell you that Dilip Kumar revealed in his book that Saira Banu came to know about the marriage through news reports and was saddened. After all, Dilip, in his own words, had promised to never marry again while marrying Saira. He shared that, "In 1982, when the news broke that I had married Asma and Saira read the sensational 'revelation' in a tabloid, it was very painful for me to console her because she trusted me and loved me unconditionally," he said in his book, as quoted by Rediff.

When Saira read this news, I was not at home- Dilip Kumar

Dilip Kumar said, "When Saira read this news, I was not at home and to be honest, neither Saira nor her mother (Naseem Aapa) believed this news because they had complete faith in me and at the time of marriage with Saira, I had honestly promised that there was no question of a second marriage and there should be no talk about it."

Saira Banu stood by Dilip Kumar's side all the time

Along with this, Dilip Kumar further said that Saira stood by him during all this, even though she was deeply hurt. "I can never forget or forgive the pain I caused to Saira and the unwavering faith she had in me. It is important to say that even in a situation when a self-respecting woman can do nothing but hate the man who humiliated her, my wife Saira stood by me when I admitted my grave mistake and asked her to give me some time to rectify this mistake through proper legal procedures and restore the sanctity of our marriage of sixteen years. I requested Saira to give me some time to sort everything out. He said, "Saira, despite her self-esteem being hurt and her unwavering faith in me, stood firmly with me on the advice of Naseem Apa and her brother Sultan Ahmed." Let us tell you that Dilip and Saira remained married even after this. The veteran actor passed away on July 7, 2021.
