The singer has worked with veteran composers Ilaiyaraaja and A.R. Rahman. Kalpana is the daughter of noted playback singer T.S. Raghavendra and singer Sulochana. She won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Pogiren from 36 Vayadhinile (2015) and the Nandi Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Navamurthulainatti from Intinta Annamayya (2018).
