Director Rajesh Rathi, who started his career as an assistant to Jagmohan Mundra with the film 'Kamala', remembers Syed Gulrez - "He was an intuitive lyricist. Gulrez, sitting with Bappi Da while composing the music, took me out. He would take me there, smoke a cigarette, and by the time Bappi da would prepare the tune, his lyrics would be ready...he always used me as a bouncing board. His lyrics were always catchy and meaningful. And his sense of humor was unbeatable. Today, we have lost a very talented writer whose full potential was never tapped."
