The film Mai Ghat: Crime No 103/2005 is from the director of the 4 national award winning, internationally acclaimed Marathi film “Mee Sindhutai Sapkal” Ananth Mahadevan , who has also made yet another award winning Marathi film called Rakmabai. The film has been selected to be showcased in the forthcoming 50th International Film Festival to be held in Goa from November 20 to November 28 this year. Based on a true story, Mai Ghat:Crime No 103/2005 revisits the summer of 2018, when for the first time in the history of the judiciary in India, two policemen were given the death sentence. It was the result of a protracted thirteen year personal war by a mother whose son was wrongly branded a thief and tortured to death in their custody. The film explores the impact of the violent act and questions our social and personal conscience, as everyone from the perpetrators of the heinous act to the victim, their families and kin are deeply impacted. The deeply flawed security system and the ominous caste barriers result in human values eroding and each character drawn into the quagmire of guilt.
Says Ananth Mahadevan, “When rag picker Nitin Athavale was picked up by a seething cop on charges of robbery, little did he realise that he would never be coming back home. Prabha Mai his mother lives with broken images of her son's torture in police custody and attempts to rally around her forces that would help her fight for justice in court. But despite an erudite lady lawyer picking up cudgels for her and even getting the CBI to intervene, the perpetrators of the violent act manage to cover up all loose ends as the case drags for 13 years. Along the way every character undergoes a cathartic transformation from Nitin's friend Suresh, Suresh's mother, the policeman's wife and his daughter. The film raises a vital moral dilemma in the end whether one really wins justice after everything is lost? "I am thankful to those who left me, because they taught me I can do it alone."
The film also stars Usha Jadhav, Suhasini Mulay, Kamlesh Sawant, Girish Oak, Vibhavari Joshi and Vivek Chabukswar. Produced by Alchemy Vision Workz and edited and directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, the film Mai Ghat: Crime No 103/2005 has screenplay by C P Surendran and Ananth Narayan Mahadevan and cinematography by Alphonse Roy. Live Sound is by Bhagat Singh Rathore, Re-Recording is by Anup Dev, Production Design is by Ramakant, costumes by Purnima Oak and original background score by Rohit Kulkarni.
