For helping animals every time they sit down to eat and inspiring fans with their compassion and strength, former Miss World Manushi Chhillar and athlete Sunil Chhetri are People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India's 2019 Hottest Vegetarian Celebrities, as voted on by the public. Chhillar sticks to a diet of fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, and other nourishing whole foods in order to keep her energized, fit, and healthy, while Chhetri never misses an opportunity to tout the benefits of animal-free eating, which he credits with improving his "recovery and digestion" and keeping him at the top of his game.

"Manushi Chhillar and Sunil Chhetri are living, breathing proof that eating vegetarian is good for both animals and our own health," says PETA India Director of Celebrity and Public Relations Sachin Bangera. "PETA India is honouring them for opting for eco- and animal-friendly fare and for encouraging their fans to do the same."

As PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to eat" – reveals in its video exposé "Glass Walls", chickens killed for food in India are aware of what's happening to them as their throats are slit. Cows and buffaloes are crammed into vehicles in such large numbers that their bones often break, before they're dragged off to the slaughterhouse, and pigs are stabbed in the heart as they scream. On the decks of fishing boats, fish suffocate or are cut open while they're still alive.

In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, eating meat has been conclusively linked to an increased risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and obesity – and a United Nations report concluded that a global shift towards vegan eating is necessary to combat the worst effects of climate change.

PETA India opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
