Mithun's father Basantakumar Chakraborty was 95 and had been battling age-related ailments for quite some time. By the way, I knew Mithun’s father Basantakumar Cjakraborty very well as I was working at the Hotel Oberoi Sheraton ( now known as Hotel Trident) 45 years ago when Mr Basantkumar was working as the General Manager of the United Bank of India, Hotel Oberoi Sheraton branch at Narinman Point. In fact such a disciplinarian was Mr Basant Kumar that once when he visited his son Mithun in Ooty, when he observed that the Hotel Monarch owned by Mithun was selling mineral water for Rs 50 when its cost was just Rs 5, he had told me frankly that he had admonished his son and asked him not to sell water given by God for the sake of profit and since then Mithun had ordered his staff not to charge for mineral water and also instructed them that mineral water should be served free of charge.

The popular Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta has not only confirmed the news on Twitter but also shared a condolence message for Mithun and his family. She wrote, "My deep condolences on the sudden demise of your father, Mithunda. Stay strong & may your dad’s soul rest in peace forever (sic)."
