Heartwarming Tale!

After debuting successfully into Marathi films with the film Time Please, Sameer Vidwans is all set to bring to the audience the story of India's first female doctor, Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi from the erstwhile Bombay Presidency on the silver screen. The film begins with Anandi's husband, Gopal Joshi (Lalit Prabhakar), who played a huge role in ensuring that she became the first Indian woman to study medicine by going abroad to Pennsylvania. Gopal Rao Joshi, whose unconventional behavior towards society, tradition and religion made the conservative Indians look at him as if he was a rebel with an ulterior motive. Gopal comes across as a stubborn and assertive guy, much to the dislike of society, especially since he makes it a point to insist on marrying a girl who knows how to read and write, that too during the late 19th century.

Anandi Gopal is a love story more than a biopic, about the relentless struggle of a husband to teach his wife and make her a literate and also her response and determination to become the first Indian female doctor, when her first born dies while she delivers it because there is no doctor in the village, where women are scared to let male doctors treat them. Lalit Prabhakar lends is role authenticity by living his character of the progressive Gopal Rao with effortless ease. Bhagyashree Milind is simply superb in the role of Anandi and complements Lalit Prabhakar shoulder to shoulder in the department of histrionics. Geetanjali Kulkarni also scores with her role as the widow

Along with the social taboos, the film also shows the couple demolish the ‘religious’ norms of that period. The couple even goes to the extent of converting to Christianity and accepting Christian names so that Anandi can go to England for further studies. Kudos to director Sameer Vidwans to come up with a beautiful and film which can warm the cockles of your heart
