Leaves A Lump in your throat!

The film revolves around deaf and dumb Madhav (Deepak Dobriyal) and Anandi (Nandita Patkar) and the kid Shankar (Aaryan Menghji) who form a small happy family living on a remote hill. “Baba” is about a family; that laughs together, cries together, and stays together, no matter what, and believes that “happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.”  Though Madhav and Anandi strive to provide whatever they can to the kid, life alters for them when Shankar’s biological parents Rajan (Abhijeet Khandkekar) and Pallavi (Spruha Joshi) arrive in their village from the city and things take a different startling turn.Due to some circumstances Pallavi had to give up the kid, but she now wants her son back. Soon, Pallavi and Rajan begin a custody battle for Shankar, in court and argue with the judge that Shankar who does not know how to read or write or even speak because Madhav and Anandi have not been able to teach him and has been deprived of the rich facilities that they could have provided him as their parents 

The story takes an emotional turn here and though the second half is predictable, it should be said that the performances of each and every actor be it Deepak Dobriyal who shines as Madhav in a very restrained portrayal and does not over act or Nandita Patkar who steals the show with her effective performance as the ‘mother’ who cares for Shankar hold it together. Spruha, Abhijeet, Jaywant Wadkar and Shailesh Datar are sincere too. A special mention goes out to Chittaranjan Giri who plays Madhav’s friend in the film and also Jayant Wadkar who gives a realistic performance as the judge in the court. Abhijeet Khandkekar does not have any scope at all to show his talent. Spruha Joshi manages to pass muster in a small role.

To his credit, I ought to say that Raj Gupta as a debutant director excels in his maiden attempt and succeeds in churning out a heart rending  film which sets out to show the poignant relationship between a small kid and his foster father. Manish Singh’s story and screenplay and Arjun Sorate’s cinematography are brilliant. Though the film has the basic premise of the Sanjeev Kumar-Jaya Bachchan starrer Khamoshi, and the fate of the film at the box office is debatable, you walk out of the theatres with a lump in your throat and copious tears in the eye, after the poignant climax
