Light hearted and Exemplarily Brilliant!
Jyothi Venkatesh
The best thing about the film Bala is that it drives home a
Ayushmann Khurrana is excellent as the bald young guy who is pining for a girl as his match and scores in his emotion al as well as mimicry scenes. He plays a real character and the best thing about him is that he never wallows in pity and you can empathize with him easily and connects to you while Yami Gautam is a bit of a letdown in the sense that her character lacks depth and she is seen merely as the puppet of her domineering mother. Incidentally, Dipika Chikalia who had essayed the role of Sita in Ramayan three decades ago puts in a decent and well rounded performance as the greedy mother of the model with credibility.
Bhumika Pednekar walks away with all the accolades in her role of a lawyer which embodies women empowerment as she plays a girl who is confronted permanently with her black complexion. Saurabh Shukla impresses while Seema Pahwa has been wasted in an inane role. So has Javed Jafery been wasted in a role of no consequence.
Where Bala scores over Ujda Chaman is in the department of story, screenplay as well as writing by NIren Bhatt. He pace is quite fast but occasionally the tempo tends to drop and the plot becomes soggy but overall the director succeeds in keeping you engrossed to your seat with the way he has directed the film.
To sum up, I’d say without any doubt that despite its flaws, the film Bala is a light hearted comedy with a difference and is definitely a winner.
