Poem on Celluloid!
Jyothi Venkatesh
The film is a cute heartwarming tale about a seven-year-old boy, in a quest to have his father back, calls 0786786786, a number he believes is Allah’s own cell phone. Instead, he reaches a CRPF Jawan, who pretends to be God and plays along, and an interesting friendship ensues.
Adapted from Mohammed Amin Bhat’s play, ‘Hamid’ is a charming portrayal of loss, love and longing in one of the world’s most troubled and military-infested zones, Kashmir. The best thing about the film is the screenplay by Ravindra Randhawa and the director doesn’t pander to jingoism, as is the case in most Hindi films about Kashmir, and sticks to the point. Rehmat (Sumit Kaul) is missing, who is father to the seven-year-old Hamid (Talha Arshad Reshi) and husband to Ishrat( Rasika Duggal).
Made on a lean budget, the film has top-notch production quality, a brilliant score by Andrew T Mackay and superb performances by Talha Arshad Reshi, Rasika Dugal, Vikas Kumar and Sumit Kaul. Special mentuion ought to ve made of not only the boy Talha Arshad Reshi but also of Vikas Kumar who plays the CRPF jawan and Rasika Duggal who plays the distraught mother whose husband suddenly goes missing. The USP of the film is that it captures Kashmir like no other film has before, including the broken beauty of its by lanes and crumbling hills and the sadness and the hopes of Kashmiris, which we haven’t seen before.
Although let me warn you that the story is very wafer-thin and there are scenes which just go on and on testing your patience, at the same time you are hooked to watch this endearing film from the first till the last frame. To put it in a nut shell, Hamid is a film which h you should not miss watching because it is a poem on celluloid.
