A heartwarming Slice of life film!

In case you have been wondering, just like me, about why the film is titled Helicopter Eela, Ella Raiturkar (Kajol) is a single mother and her only son Vivan (Riddhi Sen) is a college student who admits to feeling embarrassed and suffocated with his mother's constant scrutiny. Helicopter parents are the ones who pay extra close attention to their children's lives and experiences, to the extent of irritating them.

Eela is constantly reminding Vivan about his dabba (tiffin), asking him to keep his cell phone aside and give her more time, walks into his room without any consideration for his privacy and also overhears his phone conversations. Though tye film bears a striking resemblance in terms of the plot to Ashwini Iyer Tewari’s Nil Batta Sannata, for the uninitiated, Helicopter Eela is based on the Gujarati play Beta Kaagdo by Anand Gandhi.

The slice of life film attempts to address the concept of over possessive and over protective mothers, especially single mothers in today’s contemporary society, at a time when the kids are growing faster than their ages and demand their own privacy and personal space all the time. The film sets out to highlight without exaggerating how mothers today in the process of bringing up their kids, end up, losing their own individual identities and sacrifice their own dreams and ambitions willingly

While Kajol blends effortlessly into her role as the pop singer as well as the mother making tiffin boxes for her kid, Ridhi Sen throws a surprise for the Hindi film audiences who have not watched him in his Bengali films, with his acting prowess as a chameleon. Tota Roy Chowdhury as Eela’s husband Arun somehow lacks adrenalin in his half baked role, which does not shape up well at all.

To sum up, Helicopter Eela is a sensitive slice of life film, which is heartwarming to the core, though it is marred by a faulty screenplay which fails to rise above a flimsy plot
