Movie Review: Judgemental Hai Kya

Crazy and Edgy!

A dubbing artiste by profession, Bobby (Kangana Ranaut) aspires to become an actor herself, but while she’s waiting in line — an endless wait, given her boyfriend doubling up also as a manager (Hussain Dalal) is unable to crack it for her, and she seems to know that she is also letting some traits of the characters she’s dubbing for rub on to her . When Bobby meets her new tenants, a young married couple, played by Rajkummar Rao and Amyra Dastur, their perfectly normal life leaves her really curious. Bobby gets drawn to their love story, which in her world is too good to be true. But then a murder takes place and Bobby suspects Keshav has a role to play in the crime.

Prakash Kovelamudi narrative style is quirky, edgy and non linear but to his credit, one must say that it is one that absorbs you instantly. The mood is set with shots in dappled light, play of light and shadows and high contrast shots. While Rajkummar Rao stands out with a role that is suave and macho and his stylish performance, Kangana steals the show especially the author backed narrative gives her that scope smartly. She is in almost every scene, and does justice to the character. While in just a supporting role, Amyra Dastur does not have much scope, Amrita Puri is a revelation after a long time. Jimmy Shergill has as usual been wasted in yet another inconsequential role.

To its credit, one must concede that 'Judgementall Hai Kya' keeps the element of suspense alive all the way till the end and succeeds in pushing the envelope as a dark, psychological whodunit, with a social message weaved subtly and shrouded in confusion abundantly  that can’t be ignored. Though it is crazy and edgy, the common man will not be able to fathom what the film sets out to tell
