This sensitive and heart wrenching film which not only entertains you but also makes you set out to think is based on the inspiring real-life story of a laryngeal cancer survivor voice artiste, in which the actor-director Shiboprasad Mukherjee himself plays the character of voice artiste RJ Arjun Mullick, while Paoli Dam plays his wife Prithya and Bangladesh actress Jaya Ahsan plays the character of a renowned speech therapist, who sets out to work on his voice and restore it. The best thing about the film is that it succeeds greatly in sending a strong anti-smoking message.

The film is based on a real life story in Kolkata. The inspiration for the film is from late Bibhuti Chakraborty, a cancer survivor. Doctors removed his vocal cord through Laryngectomy but that couldn't beat Bibhuti Chakraborty, who fought all the adversities and even helped others to overcome their struggles.

Kudos to both Shiboprasad Mukherjee as well as Jaya Ahsan for having painstakingly learned the ropes to speak in an oesophageal voice, despite the fact that they have their larynx and voice box intact  for the sake of the film. Shiboprasad Mukherjee steals the show as the RJ Arjun Mullick who succumbs to the cancer thanks to his addiction to smoking cigarettes. Paoli Dam plays her role as the housewife  in distress with élan and proves that she is a seasoned actress who can get her teeth into any challenging role, whether it is author backed or not.

Despite dealing with a serious subject, Konttho is also a musical. The music directors, be it by Anupam, Anindyada (Chattopadhyay) or Prosen, each and every one has given the film his best. The background score by Prabuddhada is outstanding and undoubtedly plays a major role in the film. Prabhuddada has created a score that fills up those voids where the music speaks better than words would have.

To sum up, Konttho hits you like a hurricane and sweeps you off your feet with its delicate handling and sensitive treatment of a cancer stricken RJ who decides to take up the challenge to return to his world of voice with a vengeance. Watch it even if you do not know Bengali because it has sub titles in English
