Endearable Feel Good Tale!

Jyothi Venkatesh

Nothing seems to go right for young Kate, (Emila Clarke) a frustrated Londoner who works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. But things soon take a turn for the better when she meets Tom( Henry Golding)  -- a handsome charmer who seems too good to be true. As the city transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, Tom and Kate's growing attraction turns into the best gift of all -- a Yuletide romance and then you are in for a surprise.

The damp chemistry between Golding and Clarke takes some time to light, but eventually does so in the hands of a sweet, smart, funny script by Emma Thompson (who also plays Kate’s difficult mother), Greg Wise and Bryony Kimmings. Emila Clarke and Henry Golding are aided by a stellar supporting cast outside of Emma Thompson, particularly Michelle Yeoh as Kate’s boss Santa, a Christmas-obsessive who enjoys her own weird, utterly-enchanting romance.

Set against the current political scenario in the UK, with an undertone of the racial sentiments, the script gingerly balances all the romantic and comedic elements. Though the credulity and credibility of Kate’s story is stretched to a point of no return, with both the twists and turns within her own dysfunctional family and her burgeoning romantic relationship,- Last Christmas is one film that still turns out to be an endearing tale, which is  more than just a festive romcom.

Though there is a certain revelation in the climax which requires you as a viewer to suspend your belief which may take you out of the rest of the film,  I’d still say that  ‘Last Christmas’ is quite enjoyable with good performances, a pleasant background score and witty humor with enough ‘feel good’ factor around the holidays. Go and see it if you have a fetish to see good old romantic tales which require you to suspend your own sense of logic.
