Movie Review: Malang

The film revolves around a dramatic event in the lives of love birds Advait (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Sara (Disha Patani), which has the couple crossing paths with two rogue police officers – Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor) and Michael Rodrigues (Kunal Kemmu) , who after five years are on a mad hunt for him, and the impact they have on each other’s future. Advait goes on a killing spree on Christmas night. Uncovering the reasons behind Advait's actions is what the rest of the film, which is as predictable as it can be, is about.

Aditya Roy Kapoor’s physical transformation adds weight to all the kicks and punches he pulls in the film, but sadly he is not able to rise above his character or show promise as an actor. Disha Patani looks stunning and makes most of her role but does not impress at all. It is Kunal Kemmu who scores in a negative role while Amruta Khanvilkar throws in a surprise packet in a cameo role as Kunal’s wife in the film.

Anil Kapoor is in top form and for a change is not in a leading role but plays a cop with negative. Kunal Kemmu is sincere and surprising in equal parts. Makrand Deshpande plays a character who is very easily dispensable. Elli Evram plays a very important role in the plot and leaves a good impression with her role, though Vatsal Seth, Keith Sequiera and Shaad Randhawa are hardly able to create any impact with their zero length roles.

While Vikas Shivaraman shows his mastery over cinematography, music by Prashant Pillai is worth listening to.  The film is all about style and has overdose of mindless and violent action right from the first frame when the protagonist is introduced in the jail fighting dime a dozen inmates with gay abandon. With a predictable plot which has very little novelty, the film is nothing but a vendetta drama.

Though the film may get a great opening on account of the names of the stars that it has in it, it may peter out at the turnstiles after the first three days because it has nothing new to offer by way of riveting content.
