Movie Review: Sayonee, TRITE & LACK-LUSTROUS!

Sayonee has been released in theatres this week. Our new Hero is Rajdeep Randhawa (Tanmay Singh), who is a sharp shooter who is not only handsome but also a guitarist and a vocalist. If he is not singing ‘Sayonee’ at the outdoor stage of Kingdom of Dreams , he is shown serenading his leading lady Mahi (Muskaan ) in exquisite foreign locales as well as Punjab, even as he is going on a hunt for his girlfriend who has gone missing somewhere in Russia.The film sets out to remind you of a film seen just three months ago with a similar theme of a missing wife ending up in the flesh trade abroad and the corrupt cops there-Khuda Haafiz. Bad cop Arsaan (Rahul Roy), who is settled in the bad land

This time around, newcomer Tanmay Ssingh tries to save Musskan Sethi from the Russian mafia with the help of a bad cop Arsaan (Rahul Roy), who is settled in the bad land. This is not all and there are several surprises for you, in the form of a Russian stripper, Lena, who also knows Hindi ‘as it’s the need of the business’ while being a temptress. After the bad cop offers Rajdeep some money and asks him to go and have sex with the girl and get drunk on vodka, the silly guy ends up spending a night together with her.

And now it’s time for the hero to get his girlfriend out of the ‘crime capital’ of the world However, the director duo decides to throw in the flashback story is told with ‘Punjab da pind’ coming into action. As parents, Yograj Singh and Upasna Singh are just about routine and do not add any spark to the dull proceedings. There is a customary double twist in the tale as well, a la Abbas Mustan school of cinema, and is something that you could see coming from the opening set of scenes itself.

Rahul Roy does a ham job of being a bad cop in Sayonee

Tanmay who reminds you of Vikas Bhalla of yore, does have a good screen presence and in a softer role he can do well. All that is required of him is to scream and make noise but he excels in the tender romantic moments. As for Muskaan, she looks good and also acts ably whenever she gets a scene for herself. However, just like it happened with Shivaleeka Oberoi in Khuda Haafiz, she also goes missing in the second half. Rahul Roy does a ham job of being a bad cop and sets out to stir nostalgia by humming along to the tune of ‘Jaane Jigar Jaaneman’ playing in the background. Well, no such nostalgia can touch your heart when there is no rhyme or reason to it.

To sum up, in spite of its terrific production values, the film Sayonee just about falls flat on its face and is trite and lack lustrous despite a promising beginning, thanks to a very predictable script though it has its own twists and turns to keep you hooked intermittently
