Movie Review: Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan

Refreshingly Different!

The film revolves round how salesmen Aman Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) and Kartik Singh (Ayushmann Khurranna) find love in the capital city of Delhi, where they live in oblivion and their gay relationship grows and blossoms without being frowned upon and how, when problems start to crop up when the two decide to go back to Allahabad and succeed in convincing Aman's orthodox parents (Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta) for their approval.

Though its prequel Shubh Mangal Saavdhan was a remake of a Tamil hit Kalyana Samayal Saadham, this one is a spin off sequel of the earlier part and is not a remake. Hitesh Kewalya who had written the earlier part with Ashwini Iyer Tiwari as the director, has been promoted with this film as the director since he has also written this one.

The goings on in the film at times seems a little too farfetched and the director tries his level best to bring everything in the template of the film including the small town’s temperaments, zany antics and fads and foibles but in his over-excitement as a debut film maker, the writer director forgets to trim his film by at least 20 minutes and concentrates more on the supporting actors , including showing the amorous side of the older couple at the cost of the main leads- Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar who are forced to play supporting roles in the larger scheme of things as far as this film is concerned. While Gajraj Rao tends to go over the top, Neena Gupta manages to impress you with her effortless performances, which have a lot of nuances.

Maanvi Gagroo is wasted in a character which actually does n ot make any difference to the plot as the gay partner’s Sister whose marriage is called off because of his gay disposure. Pankhuri Awasthy is cute and does her part quite well through she has hardly any screen frame. Manu Rishi Chaddha steals the show with his split second emotions.

Where directors have not dared to show a lip to lip kiss between even Sonam and her gay girl friend in films like Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, in this film the director has dared to show Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar in a lip lock clinch more than once, making the film really realistic. The climax is an offshoot of multiple tried-and-tested formulas, and looks like it was conjured up in a tearing hurry and logic takes a backseat when the gay couple is accepted in the fold of the family after the Act 377 against homosexuals is decriminalized .

As a first time director writer Hitesh Keiwalya scores with his nuances treatment which rings cheers to the faces of the ‘conservative’ audiences who are thronging to the cinema halls to see this ‘gay’ creation.
