Predictable but appealing!

A spin off of Rohit Shetty’s blockbuster franchise Singham and a remake of the Telugu potboiler Temper starring Junior NTR, Simmba starring Ranveer Singh in and as Simmba, the film directed by Rohit Shetty is undoubtedly a blockbuster with Sara Ali Khan playing Ranveer’s love interest in the film. Though the film which has nothing new to tell has been calculatedly made to pander to the lowest common denominator, it will make you laugh as well as wipe away your tears secretly thanks to the power packed performance of Ranveer Singh who simply immerses himself into his double edged role. In short, the film is about Simmba Bhalerao Sangram, (Ranveer Singh) a bribe taking corrupt Officer, who enjoys all the perks of being an immoral and unethical police officer until a life-changing event forces him to choose the righteous path.

It is sad that Sara Ali Khan who showed us her prowess as an actress with her debut film Kedarnath has hardly any role in  this out and out male oriented film. Ditto can be said of the power house of talent Neha Mahajan who looks more like an extra. The film has an outstanding Maharashtrian flavor as it comprises of several acting talents from the State like Arun Nalawade, Neha Mahajan, Vaidehi Parshuram, Siddharth Jadhav, Vijay Patkar, Suchita Bandekar, Ganesh Yadav, Nandu Madhav, Saurabh Gokhale etc, who do their jobs effortlessly. As the director, Rohit Shetty has unabashedly put together a package which will appeal top every one not only emotionally but also offer them paisa vasool entertainment will laugh all the way to the bank.

To sum up, I’d say that it is a predictable film which however appeals to not only the frontbenchers but also the family audiences with its subtle reference to the Nirbhaya rape case which shook the country. Though it slips halfway into a sugar coated social message on women empowerment and the need to punish rapists, Rohit balances his scenes and manages to extract tears out of you at times with his emotional scenes. Music by Badshah, Tanishk Bagchi, Amar Mohile and Arjuna Harjai is catchy and mass oriented, especially the remix song Aankh Maare
